Facebook to acquire WhatsApp mobile chat app

It is speculated that social giant Facebook is to take over WhatsApp, a well known cross-platform mobile chat programme. The original source of this news comes from TechCrunch.

However, the site has no information about the acquisition price range and at what level the talks have been reached so far.

The WhatsApp app was launched in 2009 by California-based firm Santa Clara. The app is compatible with Android, Windows Phone, iOS, BlackBerry and Symbian platforms. It delivers text messages, as well as photos, video and audio contents.

The ad-free version of the app gets 100 million users every day and is available in 250 countries across the world, claims Santa Clara.

Last year in October the company revealed its chat app serves 1 billion text messages per day, which is around 41,666,667 text messages per hour, 694,444 per minute and 11,574 per second.

In a blog post then the company stated, "it was a small step closer towards our goal: providing a great mobile messaging system for a global market, regardless of your handset."

The WhatsApp Messenger app has also received amount of criticism very recently from security and mobile researchers. It is alleged the authentication process of the app is a bit risky in terms of security. Several bloggers have also called the process as a "security nightmare".

A recent research file says local data base storage encryption could be decoded.

Social giant Facebook acquires face recognition Face.com platform

It's an awesome news for Face.com as well as Facebook. The face recognition platform Face.com has now been acquired by social networking giant Facebook.

The masthead on the home page of Face.com reads, "Facebook has acquired Face.com!", thus making the announcement to be official which was rumored earlier that the two giant is in talks regarding acquisition.

The sum at which Facebook has acquired Face.com remains undisclosed by either sites. Also, terms of the deal remains a secret so far. Face.com only says now they can get "more opportunities" to build products. The company also said the social giant will keep the support going to Face.com's developer community.

The rumor related to Facebook interested in acquiring Face.com cropped up last month suggesting the two companies are in talks. Israel-based business publication Calcalist however mentioned in one report that the acquisition amount may be between $80 million and $100 million.

Thai Born American Sentenced Prison For Insulting King

A Thailand court sentenced a United States citizen Joe Gordon on Thursday for two and a half years in prison for defaming the royal family of the country by translating excerpts from locally banned biography "The King Never Smiles" of the Thai king and posting it online. The book was published by Yale University.

Born in Thailand, Joe Gordon lived in the U.S. for past three decades. He uploaded the translated excerpts from U.S. soil. The Thai government sees the online publishing of banned book as crime of lese-majeste.

Initially Gordon denied the charges. He pleaded guilty in October. According to his lawyer Arnon Nampa, the 54-year-old Lerpong Wichaicommart (Gordon's Thai name) will request a royal pardon.

Information Minister of Thailand, Arundith Nakornthap, asked for the removal of 86,000 Facebook pages between August and November.

"The King Never Smiles" was written by Paul M. Handley, former journalist. He detailed in the book a biography of King Bhumibol and argues that the Thai king led a restoration of royal power in the country which has impeded democracy development.

On Monday the king marked his 48th birthday being in hospitalized with various ailments for over two years. He had been on the throne for more than 6 decades and citizens have unquestioning loyalty towards him.

In November the Information Minister of Thailand, Arundith Nakornthap, asked for the removal of 86,000 Facebook pages between August and November. The minister said further that users of the social media who "like" or "share" content that insults the Thai monarchy are committing a crime.

India Asks Facebook, Google, Others To Pre-Screen Users' Content

SOCIAL MEDIA NEWS - Tension brews once again between the Indian government and social media and Internet companies in the country. The telecom ministry demands to Google, Yahoo, Facebook, Microsoft and others to screen users content in human and remove offensive material before it is being uploaded.

Over last three months the Indian government is in talks with the Internet giant India office to put a monitoring mechanism on what is being uploaded by users.

IT & telecom Minister Kapil Sibal said the government does not believe in censorship, but believes in self-regulation.

According to the executives of these giants, the materials uploaded in their social platforms are in line with US laws and community standards.

Indian national daily Hindustan Times reported Internet companies saying broad action to the large number of users are impossible.

Facebook has 25 million users in India and more than 10 million users are with the Google products.

No doubt there are a lot of social media and internet users in India. To suggest pre-screening all the users’ content by human beings is a job of impossible. If other Asian countries follow India asking the same question to internet companies, it is like asking social media to shut down. It is the time for site's administrators to balance between individual against defamation with the right to freedom of expression.

Google Unveils YouTube New Look

The Google empire undergoes another redesign. Now it is with YouTube, the video social network, to bring more identity to the Mountain View products.

The YouTube redesign was made public for every user across the world at 4:30 p.m. ET Thursday.

What's the change to this globally most popular online video service?

The first change to be noticed is the "add channels" button at left-hand top corner under which top ten favorite channels of users can be seen.

A soft gray background has been added to the videos and the logo of it is also been tweaked.

Integration to Google+ social network has got natural look and posting videos on Twitter and Facebook is now easier.

Google Unveils Android Music Store, Boosts Apple iTunes Rivalry

TECHNOLOGY NEWS - After Google Plus against Facebook, now Google steps into music market with Android music store to give a blow of competition to the Apple iTunes.

In the corporate battle between Google and Apple, the music offered by Google Music is priced same as rival iTunes for the US-based Android users.

All Android users in the US now can access the Google Music. However, outside the US the service is not available currently as the negotiations with Warner Music record labels is still on the half way to allow selling songs elsewhere.

The songs on the music store of search engine giant are available in MP3 format encoded at 320Kbps at a price ranging between 69c to 99c and $1.29.

Currently there are about 13 million songs on the platform and about 20,000 songs can be stored on the Google Music accounts.

Google Music is compatible on Android devices 2.2 or above. As an introductory offer, Google said of allowing its consumers downloading of one song every day for free.

The search giant also has plans of boosting its newly launched social networking site, Google+, in the US by offering the ability of sharing songs directly to other people.

More to this, Google is to make the music platform feasible for artists to distribute their work.

T-Mobile users gets additional benefit. They can purchase the songs without credit cards. The price will be added to their monthly phone bill.

Facebook Turns More Awesome, Amazing And Frictionless

TECHNOLOGY NEWS - Facebook opens up a new chapter. The biggest social network of web unleashed a torrent of updates. Yesterday at F8 developers conference, the new look of it was unveiled. It was "amazing", "awesome" and "frictionless".

Founder Mark Zuckerberg said in the annual conference of Facebook in San Francisco, "Millions of people curate stories of their lives on Facebook every day and have no way to share them once they fall off your profile page...we have been working on ‘timeline’ all year…it’s the story of your life and completely new way to express yourself."

He was talking about the redesigned profile pages of Facebook users and the launch of 'Timeline' - a new way of telling story of your life on a single page.

Zuckerberg further said about newly introduced Timeline feature: "It has three pieces: all your stories, your apps and a new way to express who you are"

Using his own profile as a demonstration of Timeline, he said he wanted Facebook users to be able to share their entire lives on the platform and also have full control about how the content is to appear online. He showed his photos as a baby in the new profile page that is organized by years.

The F8 conference was live streamed to thousands of people across the world.

Zuckerberg also announced few partnerships with companies like Spotify, Zynga, The Washington Post and Netflix for games, music and media stuff. These series of partnerships will allow users to watch movies, listen songs and read news content on Facebook via apps.

The changes have again upped the advantage of Facebook over Google in the social space. Privacy concerns are still there after so much of revamp at once.

Till date Facebook has more than 750 million members that attract 500 million users in one day, breaking web record for a non search engine site.

Earlier this year Google launched its new social network named Google+ to rival Facebook. The platform has more than 25 million members, and its neat design and privacy settings have been praised.

Facebook Invitation Goes Viral, Leading To Birthday Bedlam

AUSTRALIA NEWS – Ryan Taylor perhaps never thought in his wild imagination that his much awaited 18th birthday would become a news paper headline for all wrong reasons.

A backyard party in Cairns saw a total chaos when 100 people crashed after a Facebook viral invitation. The picture was like this: a man was stabbed in the neck, drunken youths spilled on to a busy road, and 12 police vehicles were called in. Ryan never anticipated his simple party to transform into a nightmare. He just wanted he and his mates spend a memorable event; yes, the event was indeed memorable, but a desperately forgettable memory.

According to Ryan he invited his mates in Facebook but somehow invitation went viral and lots guys, some as young as 12 crashed at the backyard of his Reservoir Rd home. Soon these drunk and aggressive party crashers created nasty actions and the celebration spiraled out of control.

The aggressive party hooligans arrived as early about 10:30 pm on Saturday and some crashers kicked down a wooden fence when there were told to move out. Soon the situation became out of control, some members of the group stampeded through the property, smashing bottles and starting nasty brawls. 20 police officers, including members of the dog squad finally took the situation under control.


"I didn’t know any of the gatecrashers and we did try to lock them out but they just pushed down the fence," Ryan said.

He said all over certain fights broke out, girls were fighting, some guys were smashing beer bottles and everything was just out of control.

“It was terrible.” Ryan recalled.


He believed the crashers got noticed about his party via the social network Facebook. He invited a small number of mates and organized a small get together. He hired a DJ and invited were sent out on Facebook. He believed someone had sent the invitation to gatecrashers and decided to come and check it out.

He said that he learnt his lesson and in future would register his party with the police and never invited people to a party on Facebook.

Neighbors were still cleaning up the party aftermath, picking up beer bottles, sweeping glass from the footpath or repairing broken fences.

Facebook Decides To Share Green Technology

WORLD NEWS/ TECHNOLOGY NEWS - Facebook, a revolutionary social networking giant, also works for the betterment of global climate. The own-developed green technology of social network’s facility in Prineville, Oregon is believed to spend 38% less power than existing centers. In a recent announcement, it has decided to share the design secrets with rival organizations for the more fruitful climate control initiative.

The design technology behind its new efficient data center is said to help other organizations to minimize their power consumption. However, irrespective of Facebook’s claim, some environmental groups have censured the firm over its green credentials.

The new innovation is named as Open Computer Project where the company will reveal its technical specifications and mechanical drawings of the building and its servers.

"It's time to stop treating data centres like Fight Club [do not talk about them]," said Jonathan Heiliger, the company's vice president of technical operations.

The announcement from the social networking site has given a push to other giants like Google, Twitter and Amazon for revelation of their own designs.

According to environmental organization Greenpeace, the total global energy usage of Facebook will have reached 2 trillion kw/h by 2020.

The Prineville plant has built a customized facility with a whooping cost of $188m (£117m) designed in environmentally friendly specifications. One of the unique innovations is the use of outside air for cooling instead extensive use of air conditioning. Those machines are also made to maximize the new cooling system.

Moreover, Facebook has stripped all paints, logos and stickers to save at least 6 pounds of material per server.

Facebook Unplugged: Bigwigs Quit, Building Own Businesses

“Eventually, I felt Facebook became too big and too corporate, and that’s when I decided to leave.”

The statement came from the mouth of Facebook’s early employee Netanel Jacobsson, who was Facebook’s director of international business development before leaving Facebook last year.

Mr. Jacobsson is not alone, but the fact is, a number of Facebook’s early employees are giving their jobs and free food and laundry services to join the entrepreneur spree. The exponential growth of this social networking site has rocketed to an incredible successful height in just six years. It is the most successful start-up of the past decade and still an initial public offering is way off. However, the quick attrition amongst early Facebook employees has raised eyebrows.

Many of former employees have studied with founder Mark Zuckerberg in Harvard University. One of the cofounders Dustin Moskovitz who was the room partner of Mr. Zuckerberg, left his job to start his own venture 'Asana'. His company makes software that helps workers collaborate.

Another Facebook co-founder, Chris Huges, has started 'Jumo', a social network for “people who want to change the world.”

The departure of early employees in the Silicon Valley successes is not a new phenomenon. Earlier, PayPal’s alumni had started other successful ventures such as YouTube, Digg, Slide and Yelp, and invested in Facebook. They are better known as PayPal mafia. In the same way internet giant Google’s former employees are known as Xooglers.

However, Facebook do not seem worried about the mass exodus. Larry Yu, the spokesman of Facebook said that the parting of former employees were small and nothing to worry about. He also said that it was expected because early employees were all entrepreneurs at heart, so it was therefore not shocking.

“We don’t view attrition as a particular prominent issue for us at this time, “he said.

Former Facebook’s employees agreed on one point that the company was a great training ground. The resilience of Mr. Zuckerberg for not accepting advertisements during their infancy stage reflected his prudent vision. Also, they acknowledged their experience fetched them a great network of contacts. It is said that former employees communicate with each other for advice.
