ECONOMY NEWS - Antoine W Van Agtmael of the International Finance Corporation of World Bank coined the word 'emerging market economy' in 1981 for the first time and defined it as such economy that has low to middle per capita income. About eighty percent of countries across world constitute the status representing twenty percent of the global economy.

Over the years it has been seen such countries are most sought after by investors. Below are list of top 5 emerging economies of the world:

China

In year 1978 the economic liberalization started. Since then the investment- and export-led economy of China grown 90 times bigger. Today, it's economy is also counted as the fastest growing major economy. The growth was 10.3% last year and according to International Monetary Fund in 2011 the growth is declining a bit to 9.5%. China's currency Yuan is appreciating on average 5.5% annually. It is now 6.5 yuan to US dollar.

India

By 2012 India's economy may surpass that of Japan, says a report by consultant PwC. The reason behind this is the devastating earthquakes and tsunami in Japan this year in March. Another report by senior economist in Crisil rating agency comments this should happen in 2011 itself and India to become third-largest economy in the world in terms of purchasing power parity (PPP). Japan's economy was $4.31 in 2010 where as that of India was $4.06 trillion.

As per 2010 figures, India's per capita GDP (PPP) was $3,586 and is the 9th largest economy in the world.

Russia

The Russian economy growth was is expected to 4.8% in 2011. According to International Monetary Fund, the inflation rate has reached to 8% in the country.

After the collapse of Soviet Union, Russia has undergone significant changes. Earlier it was centrally planned economy and now it is more to market-based.

The country is the 11th largest economy in the world by nominal value with abundance of natural gas, coal, oil and precious metals.

Brazil

In 2011 Brazil is suppose to become the sixth largest economy in the world. The recent global financial crisis is affecting its main economic powers, said International Monetary Fund.

Brazil is moderately a free market country with inward-oriented economy. Its average annual GDP growth rate is over 5%. In Latin America its economy is the largest.

Turkey

The economy of Turkey is mostly driven by the industry and service sectors. Privatization program in the country has reduced the involvement of state in basic industry, transport, banking and communication. Its has 17th largest nominal GDP in the world and 15th largest GDP-PPP.

Brazil Gets First Woman President, Dilma Rousseff

BRAZIL NEWS - Lula's designated successor- Dilma Rousseff has finally become the the first-ever woman president of Brazil. She got over 56 per cent of the valid ballots as compared to 44 per cent of her rival- Jose Serra, social democrat. Ruling-party has supported her candidature till she became the favourite candidate for the post of president. Her win is considered as the extensions of the policies of popular president President Luiz I nacio Lula da Silva.

M s. Rousseff, 62, will be inaugurated on January 1 at the helm of the world’s eighth-largest economy, with a four-year mandate and a majority in both houses of Congress.

She accepted the challenge of succeeding Lula. This would be difficult but confident enough to do it. She has the knack how to honour his legacy as well as how to consolidate his work and build upon it. An almost tearful Ms. Rousseff said of her mentor in her first address as president-elect, before an auditorium filled with PT officials.

She lacks Lula’ s charisma, as was apparent when she read her first speech after the election. In her 15-minute talk, however, Ms. Rousseff highlighted her historic position as Brazil’ s first female president.

Ms. Rousseff said her most “ fundamental commitment” would be the eradication of poverty and
the creation of opportunities for all. She emphasized economic development, the fight against “ the protectionism of rich countries,” and the need to put an end to financial speculation which increases “ the volatility of capital and currencies.”

The hugely popular Lula, 65, was barred from serving more than two consecutive terms, and he threw his weight behind Rousseff, who is an economist and once trained as a guerrilla fighter during Brazil’s military dictatorship.

World Firefighters Games 2010: SCDF Officers Returned Home With 20 Medals

SINGAPORE NEWS/ SOUTH KOREA NEWS - In the World Firefighters Games, Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) won 20 medals, including 8 golds. This is the second time the SCDF participated in WFG held in Daegu, South Korea. Only eight officers of SCDF took part and half of the gold medals are brought by the team leader Captain Ellena Quek in her outstanding performance in hurdles, triathlon, high jump and cycling.

The eight SCDF officers participated in total of twelve events, including badminton. In 2006, Singapore could only grab five medals.

Sixty countries, including Hong Kong, Brazil and New Zealand, fought hard in South Korea for medals with about 10,000 participants.

Captain Ellena Quek, returning back home, said: "It was a very good experience. What we won exceeded our expectations." She added further that meeting firefighters from different countries and swapping stories was something to take home for her.

Before the competition, the SCDF team practised for more than three months amidst their busy day-to-day schedule.

The next World Firefighters Games is to be held in 2012 in Sydney, Australia.
