Philippines' GDP Estimated Growth Up 6% In 2012: Finance Secretary

Written By one-liners on Tuesday, October 16, 2012 | October 16, 2012

By JOHN Peterson
October 16, 2012

The Filipino economy growth graph is learned to be moving northward from Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima. He says, despite global headwinds, below par national credit and fiscal deficit the economy will accelerate.

According to Mr Purisima, the growth should hover around 6 percent, above the official expectation of around 5 percent to 6 percent.

Manila aspires to grow up to 7 percent to 8 percent for the economy of Southeast Asia region that grew to 3.7 percent in 2011.

Mr Purisima told this on the sidelines of IMF and World Bank yearly fall meeting in Tokyo.

With the advent of euro - crisis, weak growth in big advanced economies, and a sharp slump in China, Mr. Purisima was still upbeat with his country's economic vision. This week IMF had declared that world economy could slip into recession, but Asia could stand tall, but not immune to relapse into slow growth, as experienced earlier, during global financial crisis.

The Philippines is in a strong position because of its export of electronic goods. The economy of the country is growing fast because
of the strong domestic demand. Call centre industry has also flourished ther and money sent home by NRFs (Nno Resident Filifinos) living abroad are added advantage.

Mr. Purisima advocates that 7 percent to 8 percent economy growth can be reached as the economy is heightened by the country's mineral reserves, which once worked well on revenue.

He also said that Mindanao, the resource-rich but impoverished southern region, has become "a whole new area of opportunity and growth gear," and the Philippines deserves to have the credit rating on its debt lifted.

Moody's Investors Service regards the country two notches into "junk" area, while Standard & Poor Ratings Services and Fitch Ratings, put it 1 rank below investment grade.

The government is making progress in its attacks against corruption and inefficiencies, which encouraged tax evasion. Reduction in interest cost, and lengthening the country's maturities have become possible through the creation of fiscal space, helped by lower rates of interest, helpful environment and improved market, said Mr. Purisima.

Last year alone the country "saved about a billion dollars in interest cost," and the budget deficit shrank to 37 percent.

Manila may tap local debt investors a bit more relative to the global bond market, "given the availability and liquidity of local market."

The existing break down of 75 percent local to 25 percent foreign issuance may be changed to 80 percent to 20 percent this year.

A meeting has been held between the bond investors and the Filipino officials in Hong Kong to apprise the investors "on what's happening in the Philippines", remarked Mr.Purisima.

The Philippines has $82 billion of foreign reserves as against foreign debt of just above $60 billion. Central bank governor, Amando Tetangco, expressed in The Wall Street Journal that the bank wishes to diversify some of those reserve holdings out of the U.S. Treasury, and into high- yielding assets.

As member of the bank's policy board, Mr. Purisima is desirous to invest more with IMF. To tide over the euro-crisis, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas loaned IMF $ 1 billion to aid in stabilizing the global economy, amid the euro-zone crisis. That was" a good investment:" felt Mr. Purisima.

He is hopeful relative to the revision of the country's "sin tax" to be undertaken by the Philippine Congress, especially upon ciggerettes and alcohol. He was disappointed thata Senate Committe version of the bill would generate a meagre 15 billion pesos ($360 million) in additional revenue 1/2 of the PHP 31 billion under the revision of the House of Representatives, and 1/4 of the Finance Department's advice.

Japan To Restart Aids To Myanmar

Written By one-liners on Saturday, October 13, 2012 | October 13, 2012

By JOHN Peterson
October 13, 2012

Japan has agreed of restarting loans to Myanmar to bring it into the global economy fold, which was once a country considered an outcast in Southeast Asia.

Tokyo steps up its effort to benefit from the potential economic growth of Myanmar.

The full support to Myanmar's sustainable economic development may start early next year tentatively, says Japan's finance minister Mr. Koriki Jojima at a meeting of international officials, on Myanmar's overdue debt.

The aids will be provided in the areas of electricity, road maintenance, rural and port development. However, the amount the loan was anonymous.

It was Japan's initiative to gather major nations as a single strong unit, to deal with Myanmar's international debt. Long previous over due loans have impeded fresh inflow of funds, needed to strengthen Myanmar's growth prospects and its fledgling democracy.

The need of the hour is that international community must support to bring in reforms and reintegrate Myanmar as one of their members, said Mr. Jojima.

No comprehensive deal surfaced at the meeting, but the members present, sensed that investing in Myanmar would be very profitable as Myanmar is a potential source  of raw materials and a possible large consumer market.

Past economic sanctions by the U.S., and other nations have stunted the growth of development of Myanmar  since late 1990s and it is time to look for outside funding, and make Myanmar to rival other South Eastern Asian countries.

Relief for Myanmar will come from Japan, in the form of bridge loan and a write-off, confirms Mr. Jojima. Also, the World Bank, the Asian Development and its government-linked bank will be roped in together to settle the arrears of Myanmar.

ANZ: New Global Bank Rules Could Have Choking Effects On Economy

Written By Admin on Friday, October 28, 2011 | October 28, 2011

NEW ZEALAND NEWS - ANZ slams the new Basel III rules for banks worldwide to increase capital adequacy and liquidity within the banks to withstand global financial shocks. Its chief executive Michael Smith told recently to the Commonwealth Business Forum in Perth that the new rules could have a 'chocking effect' on the economic recovery across the world.

Mr. Smith noted the rules were moving way far ahead of big uncertainty. He told to the delegates, "Far from increasing access to finance and improving economic resilience, I am concerned that in the current environment, there is a real possibility overly conservative rules with an aggressive implementation timetable are likely to have a choking effect on global recovery."

He also pointed to last week's International Monetary Fund (IMF) warning, which said the forces were again at work now that caused 1930s Great Depression, as businesses, governments and households simultaneously have started cutting back spending and de-leveraging balance sheets.

Mr. Smith added, leading economies' banks need to raise capital of $US1.3 trillion for complete transition to the new regulatory requirements.

He said, as per the IMF the economic cost of new regulations could raise lending of global banks by 3.5 per cent points in next five years. The regulations also include Basel III.

He also said that Basel III had been moderated earlier, but there was nothing. It is broken in Australia which needs fixing.

Christine Lagarde Becomes First Lady Of World Finance

Written By one-liners on Sunday, July 3, 2011 | July 03, 2011

By ONE Liners Agency
SUNDAY, July 03, 2011

The French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde has been appointed as the new managing director of the International Monetary Fund defeating Augustin Carstens, the head of the central bank of Mexico, after a month long fight. Christine Lagarde has been appointed to the position despite of the concerns regarding her non-economic educational background. She has been appointed as the 11th managing director of the IM, making history as the first woman director of the IMF. Lagarde, who is a retired lawyer, is 55 years of age.

Many analysts are of the opinion that Lagarde's win is the reflection of the western dominance over the leadership of the IMF. This shows that the world does not desire a non-European leadership at the IMF, a key financial organization, especially when the global economy is still being haunted by the debt crisis in Europe.

The IMF has traditionally been under European leadership, since its establishment as the aftermath of the Second World War, to protect the world economy from major disasters.

Lagarde was hugely supported by the major Asian powers such as the China and the India, after she pledged that the influence of the developing countries would be increased at the fund.

The People's Bank of China has welcomed the appointment of Lagarde as the new MD of IMF, saying that it expects her to bring about further reformation in the IMF. Carstens, the only rival of Lagarde, has also supported her. He said that the new chief is "very capable" and the IMF governance is going to progress under her. Lagarde is hugely reputed for her political experience and her formidable negotiating skills.

Christine Lagarde Quote

"...bring all my expertise as a lawyer, a minister, a manager and a woman."
