Somali Pirates Releases Singaporean Hijacked Ship

GLORY HIJACKED NEWS - Somali pirates released yesterday, November 30, Singaporean Glory ship hijacked 215 days ago off east African coast. 29,871-tonne chemical tanker MT Gmini had 23 crew on board but only 21 of them have been freed. The pirates kept 4 South Korean seaman captive, including the captain, even after a promise was made earlier to release all. The released crew non-Korean.

The Singaporean ship, owned by Glory Ship Management, was on tshe way from Indonesia through east African coast to Kenya carrying 28,000 tonnes of crude palm oil when it was hijacked on April 30 and diverted to Somalia.

Thirteen Indonesian, 3 Myanmar nationals, 4 South Koreans and five Chinese crew members were on board. Soon after the undisclosed sum in ransom was dropped from a helicopter, the Somali pirates left Glory at port of Hobyo in Somalia.

The pirates have called for freeing their mates who were captured in January this year in a South Korean naval operation and were sentenced to prisons ranging from 13 years to life. In the operation the navy commandos raided the hijacked ship and rescued all 21 crew members. Five Somali pirates were captured and eight others were killed.

SMRT Train Operator Fined For Bishan MRT Security Breach

SINGAPORE NEWS - Train operator SMRT has been fined by Singapore's Land Transport Authority (LTA) an amount of $200,000 for a security breach at the Bishan MRT depot in August that resulted in vandalised train.

On August 17 the incident took place when spray-painted graffiti was found on a northbound MRT train with words 'Jet Setter' in blue on one side of the train.

In the investigations of LTA it was found that SMRT had 'failed to exercise the due diligence and vigilance expected of a public transport operator.'

The LTA said the train operator did not inspect regularly its operating facilities. It added that due to its negligence it failed to guard against unauthorised intrusions. Moreover, it failed to detect it in a timely manner.

It added that under the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Licence & Operating Agreement (LOA) SMRT had breached the obligations.

A similar security lapse was seen in May 2010 in an incident at Changi depot. SMRT was fined $50,000 for this.

Even after the Changi depot incident SMRT has failed to implement the security measures perfectly that is recommended by the Public Transport Security Committee.

Henceforth the LTA will be tracking SMRT's performance closely so that it adheres to the security standards.

The fine collected from SMRT will be donated to the Public Transport Fund which will be a help to the needy families with transport fees.

To mark the day, Singapore National Day Parade 2011 (NDP 2011) will be held between 6.00 pm to 8.30 pm (local time) at The Float @ Marina Bay. The theme for this year's parade is Majulah! The Singapore Spirit. The word Majulah means "Onward!"

On the eve of Singapore Independence, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said in his National Day message that the city-state is in a defining moment in its history. Loong also urged to all Singaporeans to continue to work together to create a brighter future and a better home for all of us.

Brief History of Singapore Independence

On August 9 1965 Singapore, consisting of 63 islands, gained sovereignty, remaining within the Commonwealth, as the Republic of Singapore. Yusof bin Ishak became the first president of Singapore and Lee Kuan Yew, the first Prime Minister.

The city-state was declared independence from Britain on August 31, 1963, and later on September 16, same year, it joined the new Federation of Malaysia along with Malaya, Sarawak, Sabah as the result of the 1962 Merger Referendum. After heated ideological conflict between ruling parties of Singapore and Malaysia, Tunku Abdul Rahman separated the city-state from the federation in 1965.


Singapore attained self-government in 1959 after years of negotiation with the East India Company to hold general elections. Center-left People's Action Party won the election. The party had promised a Singapore united with Malaya and also completely independent of Britain.

On June 3, 1959 Lee Kuan Yew became the first prime minister of the islands. By many he is revered as the father of the nation. He stepped down in 1990.

Singapore's New Cabinet To Be Sworn On Saturday

Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Wednesday reshuffled his cabinet to regain confidence of voters. Five ministers from the cabinet have stepped down after the victory of the ruling party, People's Action Party (PAP), at the general election this month, which was a sharp drop. Eleven out of fourteen ministries gets new leaders.

Mr. Lee said in a press conference on Wednesday he was aiming for "a comprehensive reshuffle, not just incremental changes."

Details about Singapore's new cabinet

Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam, 54-year-old, elevated to deputy prime minister. He is also given the manpower portfolio. He has been also appointed recently as the chairman of International Monetary and Financial Committee.

Chan Chung Sing, 42-year-old neophyte lawmaker given the portfolio of community, youth and sports. He is a former army chief.

Law Minister K. Shanmugam, 52-year-old, will replace foreign minister George Yeo, 56, and he will hold both the portfolios.

Founder of modern Singapore, the elder Lee, father of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Lee Kuan Yew, would relinquish the position as minister mentor. He will also relinquish his post as chairman of Singapore's sovereign wealth fund, Government of Singapore Investment Corp.

Former prime minister Goh Chok Tong would relinquish as senior minister. He will be giving up his position as chairman of the central bank and will become a senior adviser to the MAS.

Prime Minister Lee will hold the position of chairman of the sovereign wealth fund.

Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng will retire from the post, and also National Development Mah Bow Tan. Transport Minister Raymond Lim is also said to retire from his cabinet posts.

Average minister's age in the new cabinet is 52. Youngest minister is 42.

Singapore's brief economy in 2011

This year the economy of the country is expected to grow 4 to 6 percent.

In March the consumer prices rose by 5 percent from a year earlier. In January it was close to a two-year high.

Miscellaneous

On Saturday, May 21, the new cabinet will be sworn.

PAP has been dominating the country since independence in 1965.

PAP's popularity sees a continuous drop. In 2006 election it could garner only 67 percent of the popular vote.

Secretary-general of opposition Reform Party, Kenneth Jeyaretnam, failed to win his seat in the election. He said, " PAP have a complete dearth of talent."

Singapore is considered to be a resource-poor island. It's total population is 5.1 million.

Cathay Pacific Lands Safely After Engine Fire

SINGAPORE NEWS / INDONESIA NEWS - Cathay Pacific plane landed safely after an engine of it caught fire on Monday. The Jakarta bound plane from Singapore was forced to turn around roughly twenty minutes after its takeoff.

Passengers said they experienced the plane shaking violently after "two sharp bangs" and the lights inside went off. Burning smell could be sensed following the blaze of the engine.

A Reuters photographer, aboard with family, said people started praying audibly after fire was discovered by them through the window.

He told, "Behind us, passengers were praying: 'God, save our flight! Give us your protection!"

The pilot thanked the passengers after landing for them being cool and calm.

The airline said in a statement, " can appreciate the concern and anxiety felt by the passengers during the incident, but our captain and his crew were in control of the situation at all times. They reacted exactly as they are trained to do, shut down the affected engine and returned the aircraft safely to Singapore."

Powered by Trent 700 engines of Rolls-Royce, the engine also had problems in the past. Last year in November a Qantas flight was close to explosion. Its engine blew apart.

Singapore Witnesses A Record Economy Expansion In 2010

SINGAPORE News – Owing to fast manufacturing activities, Singapore has been witnessing a rapid economic growth at a record rate in 2010.

The economy of the country expanded by 14.7% last year, came back strongly from 1.3% depression in previous year.

It is the record growth, surpassing the previous record of 13.8% in 1970. However, the Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong showed not exhilaration, saying it would be slowed down in 2011.

The economy increased by 12.5% in the fourth quarter, largely impelled by the manufacturing sector, which expanded by a 28.2% growth.

An economist with Standard Chartered Bank, Alvin Liew said that Singapore has become the fastest growing Asian economy in 2010.

The figures recorded by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) says, Qatar had faster growth at 16%.

Singapore’s GDP is heavily relied on international trade and vulnerable to the global economy changes. It was valued at 247.33bn Singapore dollars ($191bn; £123.7bn) in 2009.

In 2009 when globally countries had witnessed recession and downturn, the country’s GDP also shrank 1.3%.

The services sector, which accounts for 65% of Singapore's GDP, grew 8.8% in the fourth quarter of 2010.

World Firefighters Games 2010: SCDF Officers Returned Home With 20 Medals

SINGAPORE NEWS/ SOUTH KOREA NEWS - In the World Firefighters Games, Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) won 20 medals, including 8 golds. This is the second time the SCDF participated in WFG held in Daegu, South Korea. Only eight officers of SCDF took part and half of the gold medals are brought by the team leader Captain Ellena Quek in her outstanding performance in hurdles, triathlon, high jump and cycling.

The eight SCDF officers participated in total of twelve events, including badminton. In 2006, Singapore could only grab five medals.

Sixty countries, including Hong Kong, Brazil and New Zealand, fought hard in South Korea for medals with about 10,000 participants.

Captain Ellena Quek, returning back home, said: "It was a very good experience. What we won exceeded our expectations." She added further that meeting firefighters from different countries and swapping stories was something to take home for her.

Before the competition, the SCDF team practised for more than three months amidst their busy day-to-day schedule.

The next World Firefighters Games is to be held in 2012 in Sydney, Australia.

Six SAF Personnel Awarded Commemorative Medal For Peacekeeping Operations in Afghanistan

SINGAPORE - A group of six Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) servicemen were awarded with the Commemorative Medal for Peacekeeping Operations in Afghanistan by the Dutch Defence Minister Sunday afternoon for their contributions towards stabilisation and reconstruction efforts in the country.

The awarded SAF servicemen are SAF Contingent Commander in Uruzgan, Lieutenant Colonel Alvin Chan; former SAF Contingent Commander in Uruzgan, Lieutenant Colonel Dinesh Vasu Dash, who served in Uruzgan from November 2009 to July 2010; and four members of an SAF surgical team comprising team leader Major (Dr) Muhammad Idu, Major (NS) (Dr) Mathew Cheng, Major (NS) (Dr) Philip Iau, and Captain (NS) (Dr) Tan Wah Tze.

The SAF surgical was teamed up with the Netherland since 2008 in the field hospital in Tarin Kowt, Uruzgan in providing surgical and medical support to International Security Assistance Force personnel and emergency medical care to the locals.

Singapore to host Asian edition of World Islamic Banking Conference

SINGAPORE : Singapore will be hosting the first Asian edition of the World Islamic Banking Conference (Asia WIBC) in June next year.

This was disclosed by the Monetary Authority of Singapore's managing director, Heng Swee Kiat, at the 16th WIBC in Bahrain.
