TIMES Person Of The Year Nomination: An Unlikely Candidate

Guess who's the latest nominee TIMES Person of the Year? Barrack Obama? No. Xi Jinping? No. Tim Cook? No.

The latest nomination for the TIMES Person of the Year has gone for as unlikely a candidate as anything - the Curiosity rover.

In case you don't know who (or rather what) the Curiosity rover is, Curiosity is NASA’s latest and probably the most important mission to Mars in the recent years. The Curiosity took off on November 26, 2011 for the Red Planet and in this one year it has sent back enough scientific data to change the course of human understanding of Mars forever. Curiosity landed on Mars on August 5 this year, and in a Hollywood hero-style entrance; the final minutes of its landing having been dubbed the “seven minutes of terror”.

Although, Curiosity’s grand entrance, TIMES Magazine notes, was what made the world stand up take notice of it, the rover’s achievements have gone far beyond that.

The Curiosity has sent back a staggering 23,000 raw images, already driven 517 meters and has delivered some history making data, all within only these three months of its 3 year mission on Mars. The Curiosity rover even delivers information to the public via a three-woman team in NASA, on its own social media network, through the social media site Foursquare, checking-in from the Red Planet, with regular tweets and updates for future travelers.

Here goes one of her updates, she checked-in from the Gale crater, on August 6 immediately after her landing:

Mars is cold, dry and rocky. Extra moisturizer and sturdy shoes would be a good idea, plus oxygen for those of you who breathe.

Solar Eclipse Over New Zealand & Antarctic Peninsula On Friday

Solar eclipse in Antarctic

By STAFF Reporter
November 22, 2011

New Zealand will get a slight glimpse of Solar Eclipse on Friday, November 25th. According to report by space agency NASA, the partial solar eclipse will be seen in Wellington just before the sunset at 7.30pm.

Nasa further says the solar eclipse can be viewed from the entire South Island along with the lower half of the North Island. The line of eclipse will be from Napier through to New Plymouth.

The news also reveals only New Zealand will be the populated landmass where the solar eclipse can be viewed.

The weather department of New Zealand forecasts clear sky on Friday in Wellington, though it may be little windy.

Bellingshausen Sea's Antarctic Peninsula western side will get the maximum eclipse viewing.

Friday's solar eclipse will be the fourth eclipse of 2011. Some years experience five solar eclipses.

Space shuttle era ends | Time to think big on space exploration?

By ETHAN Markoff
July 21, 2011

WORLD NEWS/TECHNOLOGY – After 126 million miles traveled, 30 years to revolve in the universe, space shuttle Atlantis has finally returned back on Earth, putting full stop on NASA’s 30 year orbiter program.

It is the most memorable and sentimental moment in the Kennedy Space Center when the shuttle Atlantis touched down for the last time, lowering the most eventful eras in America’s spaceflight program. The end of half century of US dominance in space, Nasa’s shuttles were significant in building space station and to maintain the Hubble telescope.

"The space shuttle changed the way we view the world and it changed the way we view the Universe," said Commander Chris Ferguson on landing.

The shuttles pre-dawn landing seemed a shy affair compare to imperial spectacle of its final launch 13 days ago, which pulled one million visitors to witness the final voyage. The final landing of Atlantis is no less than mourning for Nasa employees as they turned out in the darkness to welcome the most successful spaceflight in the history of space program in the world.

The US government has ordered the retirement of Nasa’s iconic shuttle because of high cost of maintenance. The US space agency is now putting effort to invite private parties to maintain and develop the transport services in the space. There are already number of private organizations have started their space venture. Although according to the report, flight is still to be ready and will take at least 3 to 4 years to be in space.

In the meantime, Nasa will take the help of Russian to ferry its people to and from the International Space Station (ISS).

Nasa has contemplating to invest money from the saved shuttle operations to new spaceship that can take humans to the Moon, asteroids and Mars. The spaceship Orion is already being designed and development is in progress.

NASA Creates A Big Black Hole In The Pockets Of The Americans

Written By one-liners on Tuesday, August 24, 2010 | August 24, 2010

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)
Billions spent on million light years!!! The National Aeronautics and Space Administration, in short NASA, is a name quite familiar to the world for its incredible achievements to betray the mysteries of cosmos, though far away from the surreptitious of creation. Nevertheless, no one can deny the fantastic milestones reached by the executive branch agency of the United States government, responsible for nation’s civilian space program and aeronautics and aerospace research. But there is a flip side of the story, which is pushed underneath the feats of the organization.

NASA success can’t overlook the blunder it created in the past. NASA has spent a staggering $450 billion since the Apollo 11 Project of 1969, of which most has been sheer wastage. Werner von Braun, one of the renowned rocket developers and champions of space explorations during his times, did a extensive space program on Moon, including Mars landing and outer living creature research. The money spent in every mission was stupendous and the brunt had to bear by common American citizens.

To a common man NASA holds a picture quite similar to blockbuster Space Odyssey, but the expectation rather led to disappointment, to say at least. To begin with the constellation program, a complete failure by itself. The program, on which billions of dollars spent, was proved to be incorrect by the engineering and analysts. As a result US had to bear lots of unanticipated expenditure.

The project Cassini & the JPL mission called CRAF (Comet Rendezvous/Asteroid Flyby) are also classic examples of NASA’s spendthrift nature. The missions demanded a huge amount of money and were eventually sold to the Congress. The only use of these profligate projects was their capability of beautifying an exhibition, to sound the least scornful. The much publicized the Hubble Robot Repair Mission is yet another example of wastage of American tax paying common people money. This project started of with a budget of $600 million and rocketed to $2,200 million.

However, in the background politics play a bigger part than science. The government readily agrees with the whooping expenses, with much of common people money, is all part an intricate political game. The bottom-line is just that if NASA succeeds (which obviously is not a regular issue), then it reflects well upon the contemporary government.

Whether NASA has understood the secrets of black hole or not, is still in quandary. However, undoubtedly it’s no longer a secret of black hole in common citizen's pockets.
