TURKEY EARTHQUAKE NEWS - A 7.2 magnitude earthquake had hit yesterday in eastern Turkey near the Iranian border in the province of Van at 1:41 p.m. local time. There were at least 200 aftershocks after the quake, said the website of Kandilli observatory and Earthquake Research Institute.

It is learned the tremor was 3 miles below the surface. According to officials, about 1000 people is feared to be dead. Government officials said about 4000 homes may have been damaged due to the strong earthquake, biggest in the province since 1976 that killed 3,840 people. Most severe earthquake was seen in Turkey in 1999 which killed at least 17,000 people.

Turkey Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in a state television address, "Just as we re-established other regions hit by earthquakes, so will we get this place back on its feet... We are not going to leave people to their own devices in the winter cold."

Before his address Erdogan visited the earthquake hit area to oversee the rescue efforts.

National disaster body based in the prime minister's office briefed in a statement, "There is serious human and material loss."

Electricity is cut throughout the province. Lanterns are being used by people to rescue victims.

In a television footage one man shouted, "My wife and child are inside! My 4-month-old baby is inside!"

More Than Half Of India Earthquake Prone

INDIA NEWS - Not only Sikkim and the Northeast as a whole, more than half of the country is earthquake prone. In twenty years the Sunday evening earthquake in Northeast was the worst, measured 6.8 on Richter scale and the epicenter was Sikkim.

According to Central Seismological Observatory data, the entire region is increasingly unstable. In 2009 there were 34 earthquakes there, 26 in 2008, 26 again in 2007 and in 2006 it was hit 23 times.

Northeast, Punjab, Rann of Kutch, parts of Kashmir and central Himalayas fall in Zone 5 of areas most prone to quakes. Jammu, Delhi, Bihar, Maharashtra and Indo-Gangetic basin is in Zone 4, slightly less risky but extremely dangerous. Zone 3 areas have moderate risk where as Zone 2 is the safest.

Few days before Zone 4 Delhi experienced 4.2 intensity earthquake. However, scientists deny of any connection between the two quakes.

RS Dattatrayam, Seismologist at India Meteorological Department said, "It is incorrect to connect a 4.2 intensity earthquake in Delhi with a 6.8 one in Sikkim."

Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. met the survivors of tsunami in Japan in his three day East Asia visit on Tuesday speaking of a rapid disaster recovery taking place in the country.

He was speaking to the reporters at the airport in Sendai, the close by city of the northeast disaster in Japan on March 11 this year as an aftermath of earthquake and tsunami.

Japan is the "anchor" of United States' interest in Asia, said Biden describing the country. In his visit he also met Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan.

Kan is expected to resign next week by Tuesday. It is learned that Kan apologized for the political situation in Japan. Votes for the next leader, seventh prime minister of Japan in five years, will take place on Monday by the ruling Democratic Party.

Kan was supposed to be traveling to Washington, as per the schedule, next month, but it has been cancelled as his grip on his post unraveled.

China, India Economies Vulnerable To Natural Hazards: Study

Written By Admin on Friday, August 12, 2011 | August 12, 2011

By STAFF Reporter
August 11, 2011

The economies of China, India, Indonesia and Philippines face maximum risk due to natural disasters, reveals a report released by Maplecroft, an analysis and mapping company.

The firm mentions these emerging economies lack the combating capacity from the disaster caused naturally and also from its impact. It adds, Japan and US are also highly exposed to such natural hazards, but they are well equipped to combat with the impacts.

In its Natural Hazards Risk Atlas 2011, Maplecroft lists 196 countries across the world that are exposed to natural disasters such as tsunamis, earthquakes, floods, drought and tropical cyclones.

According to the atlas, USA ranks on the top followed by Japan, China and Taiwan. These four countries are categorized as "extreme risk" and titled as absolute economic exposure to natural hazards. The remaining five countries in the top ten list are India, Philippines, Turkey, Indonesia and Italy respectively. These six countries are categorized as "high risk".

The tsunami in Japan, United State tornadoes, New Zealand's Christchurch earthquake, and the Australia flood this year are assessed to have economic impact of $265 billion. This is just the first six months of 2011. Never earlier natural hazard costs so much to the world economy.

Japan To Restart Its Nuclear Reactors

Written By one-liners on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 | July 12, 2011

By ONE Liners Agency
July 12, 2011

ENVIRONMENT NEWS – After the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, Japan stopped all its nuclear activities, but in a recent statement, the government has clarified that it thinking about the restarting dozens of nuclear reactors, idle since the 11 March tsunami and quake.

Last week official had announced a “stress tests” in two phases to see whether nuclear reactors were in condition to restart or not. However, there is no official declaration of timescale for the tests. It is noted that March’s disaster paralyzed the country’s development to a great extent after nuclear leak in the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

Japan is amongst world topmost nuclear power generator and two-thirds of Japan’s 54 reactors have crippled since March, awaiting government’s approval to restart. Meanwhile, officials released the latest death toll from tsunami and earthquake, which says 15,547 died and 5,344 are missing,

Later on, the Fukushima leakage caused a nationwide horror and sparked a national review of its energy policy. The public opinion in the country is largely against the nuclear plants.

Japan is an earthquake prone country, so the stress tests are specially emphasized on whether 35 reactors currently sitting idle withstand tremor. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yokio Edano said that their first priority was to ensure safety and security of people.

Prime Minister Naoto Kan was under huge pressure while approving the stress tests. He is under extreme pressure to resign his post for the debacle caused due to negligence.

To start the reactors huge amount of energy will be needed, so officials have yet to declare a timetable for the test, fearing it will cause confusion among people.

FRIDAY, June 24, 2011

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A tsunami warning been issued by West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center late Thursday for the coastal areas of Alaska after a powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake hit off Alaska in Pacific Ocean and shaken Aleutian Islands of Alaska. No immediate report of injuries or damages have been reported so far.

Coastal residents have been warned to immediately keep away from all harbors and move higher ground inland.

US Geological Survey statement said the earthquake on Fox Island struck at 6:09 pm local time (0309 GMT). The island is 101 miles east of Atka, tiny fishing port. The statement added small buildings and homes are not designed to withstand tsunami impacts so people are advised to stay away of all the structures.

Earthquakes above 7 magnitudes are common in the Aleutians, but due to remotely connected chain islands and sparse population the consequences are little.

According to USGS geophysicist Randy Baldwin, the area where powerful earthquake struck on Thursday evening is seismically active area.

No tsunami threat for Australia, said Bureau of Meteorology (BOM).
