CAIRO, Kenya - Amid repeated abuse and violence over its citizens working as maids in Middle East, the Kenyan government has barred export of labors temporarily.

In an statement by ministry of foreign affairs political and diplomatic secretary Patrick Wamoto the government said it aims to protect its people from abuse. The statement also read that Kenyan domestic workers employed in the Middle East ended up in distress and so the government has suspended the recruitment and export of labors temporarily with immediate effect to the Middle East.

The concerns mentioned in the statement for this action were complaints by its citizens related to mistreatment, overwork, lack of salaries, lack of communication with relatives and denial of food.

The statement note also read, "In some cases, Kenyans are lured by unscrupulous and unregistered agents who promise non-existent and supposedly lucrative jobs to desperate and unsuspecting Kenyans."

Over the years maids from across the world to Middle East often complained of horrible treatment in the region and especially in Saudi Arabia. The complaints included sexual abuse and rape.

SAUDI ARABIA NEWS - Succession questions rises after the death of Saudi Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, who died in a New York hospital due to colon cancer early on Saturday. He was 80.

The ascension to the throne is a complex process in the country. It does not pass from father to son. The decisions of the successor are cloaked always in secrecy.

The assumed next-in-line is Prince Nayef who is serving the country as interior minister since 1975. He is in his late 70s. In 2009 he was made second-deputy prime minister in absences of Abdullah and Sultan, his two elder brothers.

Sultan was half-brother of King Abdullah and was ill for some time. After his death, Saudi television broke into normal programming and started televising footage of pilgrims in Mecca and the Koranic verses.

Burial of Sultan is scheduled for Tuesday. His body will be flown back from New York to Saudi Arabia.

Sultan had served as the defense minister of Saudi Arabia for decades. He was called as a "valued friend" of United States by President Barack Obama.

Former U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Robert Jordan called him a "staunch ally."

Indonesian Workers In Saudi Arabia

SAUDI ARABIA NEWS – Prodded by the national and public emotional protests to assert a better solution and dispel the sense of peril, Saudi Arabian government has decided to temporarily ban all visa permits to two south East Asian countries Indonesia and Philippines for “better security” of their citizens.

In a statement labor ministry of Saudi Arabia said that it would stopped issuing visa permits for all workers belonged to Indonesia and the Philippines. Further, Riyadh said to implement new guidelines for these two South East Asian countries for a better protection of their people.

Earlier this month a household worker beheaded in Saudi Arabia, which created much furor among citizens, forced Jakarta to announce a moratorium on its national working in Saudi Arabia.

It is reported that more than two million Filipinos and Indonesians work in Saudi Arabia.

The new rules for these two Asian countries will come into effect from Saturday. Saudi labor ministry said.

In recent times, Riyadh tried to open new channels for domestic workers from other countries, as the country has a heavy requirement of domestic workers. The domestic works fetch good money, but report of abuse is ubiquitous.

The statement from labor ministry added: "The ministry's decision coincides with its great efforts to open new channels to bring domestic workers from other sources."

The Indonesian labor ministry said about 10,000 citizens had work permit to enter Saudi Arabia this month. The ministry kept mum on the report of ban, but expressed its apprehension about the effect of the ban.

Earlier this month an Indonesian domestic worked Ruyati Binti ruthlessly executed by a Saudi Arabian family incited protest. Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono also expressed his grief and resentment on this incident, called it against the “norms and manners” of international relations.

Saudi Woman Acquitted In Trial Torturing Indonesian Maid

Written By Malila Harris on Monday, April 4, 2011 | April 04, 2011

By MALILA Harris

SAUDI ARABIA NEWS - Indonesia has strongly condemned the acquittal of a Saudi woman trial, who was guilty of ruthlessly torturing her 23 year-old young Indonesian maid. Talking to reporters, an Indonesian diplomat in Saudi Arabia has strongly criticized the decision, saying the sentence didn’t recognize the torture and it meant all tortures were free.

Indonesian diplomat Didi Wahyudi told BBC about the original three year sentenced given to Saudi Arabian woman and considered as a landmark verdict, but the recent overturned of sentence have brought a dark side of the justice and tortures were readily accepted as a common practice.

It is reported that around thousands of Indonesian women work in Saudi Arabia as a domestic helpers and often complain about the abuse by their employers. Just a few days back two people were arrested for violent death of their Indonesian maid in Mecca.

A number of Indonesian women get employment in Saudia Arabia as domestic workers and there are large number of cases of their abuses and tortures. However, there is hardly any punishment for the tortures, some get a hefty fine and that’s all.

The recent case of Sumiati Binti Salan Mustapa, 23, was hospitalized after being brutally beaten by her employer. Her bones broke down and her face was burned.

Her case captured global eyeballs, and promoted the Indonesian president to demand justice for her torture. Due to pressure her employer 53-year-old female was arrested and sentenced to three years in Jail in January by a court in the Saudi city of Medina.

She appealed against the sentence and was acquitted on Saturday after a judge deemed there was insufficient evidence.
