African Union has stepped into the 5oth anniversary to work together for the betterment of the continent. AU Chairman and Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn opened the celebrations in presence of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, US Secretary of State John Kerry and Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff.

Desalegn said the union should work forward in creating Africa free from poverty and conflict, and the citizens in the continent should enjoy a middle income status.

African Union started in 1963 as Organisation of African Unity (OAU) during the dawn of independence.

Speaking to the AU's modern at the Chinese-built headquarters in Ethiopian capital Desalegn said today they are meeting at such a time when the continent is rising. He also appreciated China for their investment support in billions to assist their infrastructure endeavours.

Africa is now home to several fastest-growing economies and in recent years have attracted foreign investment in huge amounts.

Moamer Kadhafi's death in Libya's 2011 conflict stripped major source of funding for the AU. Crisis in Mali will be one of the top most agendas of the meet along with the political deadlock in Madagascar and Democratic Republic of Congo since 2009.

CONGO ELECTION NEWS - Congo goes on ballot today, Monday, after weekend clashes between rival parties supporters and security forces in the run-up to parliamentary and presidential election. This is the second post war vote in which the entire Congolese are able to vote.

President Joseph Kabila, in power since 2001, is fighting against ten rivals. More than 18,500 candidates are competing in the five hundred parliament seats.

The poll started late in Goma's eastern lakeside town which experienced some worst pre-election violence. Ballot boxex arrived late at one polling station in Lubumbashi's southern city. Thousands of people were seen in the early hours lined up at polling station to cast their ballots.

In last 15 years the mineral-rich state has seen two wars and experienced decades of misrule. Though officially the last conflict ended in 2003 but the nation in the heart of Africa always remained plagued by instability. The eastern part of Congo is still ruled by plethora of foreign and local rebel groups.

In 1996 Congo plunged into war after neighbors and rebel fighters teamed up to overthrow Mobutu Sese Seko, corrupt men and former dictator who ran the country three decades of kleptocratic rule.

The first election after the end of wars was held in 2006 and was seen as free and fair election but after the voting gunbattles erupted.

On the Human Development Index the United Nations ranked Congo in dead last of 187 countries.

RIM Explains BlackBerry Outage, Not Service Resuming Time

Written By Admin on Thursday, October 13, 2011 | October 13, 2011

Updated: RIM claims full BlackBerry services restored.

TECHNOLOGY NEWS - RIM did gave an explanation for the outage of its BlackBerry, but even after 4 days it has still not come up with the time frame when the email and messaging services will resume functioning, which has affected customers throughout the world, even for BlackBerry owners in United States and Canada.

The BlackBerry outage started on Monday in Middle East, Europe and Africa with no email and BlackBerry messaging services in the region. By yesterday, the device owners in Asia, United States and Canada have also started finding problems in the services.

The BlackBerry network architecture is the strength of RIM, and it can also be considered as its biggest weakness. In this technology all the e-mails and messaging traffics are routed by RIM's BlackBerry central server. This mean an additional encryption and security is added, which attracts many potential customers who are security concerned with their mails and messagings.

The negativity of this architecture is its single point failure throughout the network. The entire regions service can be disrupted if there is a major infrastructure problem.

Google's Android and Apple's iPhone do not suffer such a large outage as the two don't offer centralized architecture.

Analyst with Forrester Research, Charles Golvin said, "When RIM's architecture works, it's a huge competitive advantage... But when it fails, it's a millstone around RIM's neck."

So far, millions of BlackBerry owners across the world are suffering due to RIM's network problems. Many have threatened through social networking site Twitter of ditching BlackBerry for competing products such as Apple's iPhone.

There are yet some words to be received by the company whether affected customers will be compensated.

Al-Qaeda Affiliate Responsible For Somalian Genocide, Not Famine

Written By Admin on Monday, September 5, 2011 | September 05, 2011

From EDITOR'S Desk
September 05, 2011

SOMALIA NEWS - Somalia is suffering the worst. In sixty years this is the worst drought in the country. In last 3 months about 29,000 children have died, and in next few weeks about 100,000 more Somalis are expected to die. Who is responsible? Is it only famine that have destroyed the country to such an extent?

Al-Shabab, an al-Qaeda affiliate, has destroyed Somalia.

The Taliban-like organization has imposed strict Sharia law in the country taking over much of southern Somalia territory. It disallows all those humanitarian organizations which are associated in any way with the Western world in aiding the starving Somalis.

In January 2010, the al-Shabab expelled World Food Programme of United Nation. The group accused the programme being a United States proxy.

Is United States to be blamed for the famine?

United Nation has described the country for past several years as the worst humanitarian crisis in the world. About 11.8 million people across "Horn of Africa" - eastern peninsula of Africa including Somalia, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti - have been affected of this crisis.

Somalia's current population is about 9.9 million, and one quarter of it has been displaced. About 1,500 people are escaping every day across the border in Kenya, in a refugee camp there. According to United Nation, more than 3.7 million people there need food and water, and it includes 1.25 million children. The United Nation data further reveals that 63% of southern Somalia is either starving or is at risk of starvation. The situation is far worst because only 20% of the people are being reached by relief workers.

In the present situation, a war is undergoing between the Federal Transitional Government (FTG) and al-Shabab. The group, which loosely translates as "the youth," enforces Sharia law and ruthlessly murders anyone trying taking over Somalia. The FTG is being supported by African Union troops and the West.

The biggest disadvantage of humanitarian aid is Al-Shabab stealing away all for feeding its militants, and even selling the aids to enable the fighting run longer and to continue it unending. A big question arises for the International community whether to continue the humanitarian aid.

The recent statement of Sheikh Muktar Abu Zubeir, leader of al-Shabab, says - "Aid agencies and some countries declared famine and pretend they want to help you. They do so for these reasons: for trade purposes, to convert you from your religion and to colonise you."

Are Somalis dying because of famine?

Are they dying because of the terror group preventing relief from getting to Somalis?

There are many regions around the world that suffer from drought but those regions cope up with the situation without ending up in famine. Even southern U.S. faces drought.

The U.S., so far, has provided more than $600 million aid support to Somalia, which is the highest than aids of any country. Way back in 2008 Washington designated al-Shabab to be a terrorist organization, and made it illegal to providing any aid to areas in control of the group. Even two charities were barred from drilling a bore hole as the water could be used by al-Shabab.

With all the blames on U.S. by critics, the state Department states to relax enforcement against charities providing humanitarian aid in Somalia. More to this, U.S. Agency for International Development announced further of providing additional $23 million to the Horn of Africa. Somalia alone gets $10 million from this amount.

Since 1969 the country has been in turmoil when military dictator Mohamed Siad Barre seized the control. He brought element of Islamic rule into the government. However, in 1991 his government collapsed and till date the country is suffering from getting any central government control.

Somalia gained independence in 1960 from western colonialists.

In 1993 a U.S. humanitarian effort was made with the U.N. to provide aid. It was the earlier days of draught. In the effort eighteen troops were killed in Somalia by militants, backed by Osama bin Laden. The situation and incidence have been documented in a movie named Blackhawk Down.

The Somalia-based operation of Laden blew up U.S. embassies in 1998 in Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and Kenya. In the bombings 320 people were killed. In 2009 U.S. found and killed Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan, top al-Qaeda operative behind the bombings.

By 2008 the terror group colluded with the Somali pirates for stealing ransoms and bounties. Now Somalia is in shambles with most of the infrastructures wiped out including schools and landline phones.

What should be done about Somalia?

Global Population Expected 9bn By 2050, India To Topple China

Written By one-liners on Sunday, July 31, 2011 | July 31, 2011

July 31, 2011

Harvard School of Public Health cites figures in its press release that global population may exceed 9 billion by 2050. In a review article of Professor David Bloom published in Science, it is learned that by 2100 the population is expected to rise to 10 billion. In 2011 it will top 7 billion, mentions the article, which is more than double what the global population was 50 years ago.

Bloom says that the growth will be highly uneven geographically. He adds that developed countries such as Germany and Japan may see flat population growth figure or even it may decline, but the developing countries are expected to explode. In developed countries demographics crisis can be faced as society will fail to produce enough adults who could take care of the old, where as the demographics will be challenging to the developing countries with food supply, water, housing and energy.

The report says that in Africa alone the population may grow to 1.1 billion, which will be 49% of the global projection by 2050.

However, it is a popular belief that earth will never run out of resources in accommodating the growing population. According to agricultural scientists, earth has more than enough land to feed all its population. Also, calculation reveals if the global population is packed in the density similar to New York City, the world population would fit in the state of Texas.

July 29 issue of Science magazine writes by 2050 India will topple China, the present largest population country of the world. India's population will grow to 1.69 billion from 1.24 billion where as the population of China would shrink from 1.35 billion to 1.3 billion.

First Woman Convicted Of Genocide, 800,000 Killed In 100 Days

Written By one-liners on Sunday, June 26, 2011 | June 26, 2011

SUNDAY, June 26, 2011

Former Rwanda minister has been sentenced to life in prison on Saturday by judges at the United Nation. Pauline Nyiramashuhuko becomes the first woman to be charged with genocide and incitement to rape by an international court. Her son Arsene Shalom Ntahobali is co-accused and sentenced to life too. United States has welcomed the conviction.

Nyiramasuhuko, 65, has been found guilty on 7 genocide charges out of eleven by International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda of atrocities. She was the minister for women's empowerment in Rwanda then.

The International court found that Nyiramasuhuko and Arsene had helped in abducting hundreds of ethnic Tutsis who were raped, assaulted and killed in the southern region of Butare. During the 100-day genocide, about 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus were slaughtered between April and June 1994 with the help of extremist Hutu militia called Interahamwe.

Nyiramasuhuko was born in southern Rwanda into a modest family. She enrolled at university at 40 and gained a law degree. She was appointed as the minister for women's advancement in 1992. After the 1994 killing and victory of Rwandan Patriotic Front she fled to Congo. In 1997 she was arrested in Kenya and was transferred to the ICTR. In 2001 she appeared at the tribunal and the trial became the longest running at the ICTR. Sixteen years after the verdict comes.

Asia-Australia Banana Farms Battling Bacteria

Written By one-liners on Thursday, April 28, 2011 | April 28, 2011

By ONE Liners Agency

AUSTRALIA NEWS - Banana plantations in Australia are facing a major threat due to bacteria traveled from Indonesia, Philippines and Africa. Discussions recently in the Northern Territory's capital Darwin at a scientific conference revealed that three very similar types of bacterias from the three region have spread quickly.

The bacterias are Indonesia's blood disease bacterium, Philippines' bugtok bacterium and Africa's xanthomonas bacterium, said Australian plant pathologist at the conference hosted jointly by Australian and Asian Plant Pathology Societies.

The bacterias are one of the biggest threats to the bananas there and for the first time scientists from Asia and Australia have come together to gain some research findings from the discussions.

Richard Davis, Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service plant pathologist, said the bacteria have been very devastating in these countries and have spread too quickly, crossing hundreds of kilometres in a year.

About 400 scientists attended the event from Australia, Indonesia, Solomon Islands, Philippines, Fiji, East Timor, Africa and Papua New Guinea.

Meanwhile, the prices of bananas in Australia have soared after the devastation caused by Cyclone Yasi in February this year.
