Nepal To Measure Everest To Close The Chinese Argument

NEPAL NEWS – To close the bracket of argument with China over the exact height of the world’s tallest mountain, the government of Nepal has ordered a new survey to re-measure the height of Mount Everest.

Presently the measured height of Everest is designated as 8,848m (29,029ft). But China and Nepal have had a long argument over the exact height this mountain.

The Chinese have stated to measure the mountain from its rock height, whereas Nepal said it should be measured by its snow height – which is four meters higher.

Last year both the countries came to a common conclusion that the height of the mountain should be designated as 8,848m. However, later on while border talks between two countries Chinese officials stuck their minds on rock height.

Nepal government spokesman Gopal Giri said they wanted to clear the confusion and ended the row of China. He said Nepal was equipped with modern technology and resources, so they could measure it themselves.

It is noted that the first time Nepal government has taken initiative to measure the height of the Everest.

Three stations with global positioning system will be set-up at three different locations and the estimate time to measure the peak would take two years.


After the first ascend of the peak by Sherpa Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary in 1953, many mountaineers keep climbing this peak, but the exact height of the peak has been in disagreement ever since the first measurement was taken in 1856.

India conducted a survey in 1953 and the height of 8,848 was broadly accepted by all. However, later on due to climatic changes and a few other disputes, many analysts had expressed disagreement over the height.


Many geologists say the mountain would be much higher than the current accepted height because India is gradually pushed beneath China and Nepal due to shifting continental plates.

The US National Geographic Society accepted the figure of 8,850m measured by an American team used GPS technology to measure the height of Mount Everest. Nepal has not officially accepted the figure.

Japan To Restart Its Nuclear Reactors

ENVIRONMENT NEWS – After the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, Japan stopped all its nuclear activities, but in a recent statement, the government has clarified that it thinking about the restarting dozens of nuclear reactors, idle since the 11 March tsunami and quake.

Last week official had announced a “stress tests” in two phases to see whether nuclear reactors were in condition to restart or not. However, there is no official declaration of timescale for the tests. It is noted that March’s disaster paralyzed the country’s development to a great extent after nuclear leak in the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

Japan is amongst world topmost nuclear power generator and two-thirds of Japan’s 54 reactors have crippled since March, awaiting government’s approval to restart. Meanwhile, officials released the latest death toll from tsunami and earthquake, which says 15,547 died and 5,344 are missing,


Later on, the Fukushima leakage caused a nationwide horror and sparked a national review of its energy policy. The public opinion in the country is largely against the nuclear plants.

Japan is an earthquake prone country, so the stress tests are specially emphasized on whether 35 reactors currently sitting idle withstand tremor. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yokio Edano said that their first priority was to ensure safety and security of people.


Prime Minister Naoto Kan was under huge pressure while approving the stress tests. He is under extreme pressure to resign his post for the debacle caused due to negligence.

To start the reactors huge amount of energy will be needed, so officials have yet to declare a timetable for the test, fearing it will cause confusion among people.

The Government of India's primary space research body ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) published a report, showing images of retreating Himalayan glaciers. The satellite images revealed shocking pictures, depicting 75% of Himalayan glaciers were shrinking at a steady pace with average shrinkage rate being 3.75km during the 15 years under study. In 2007, IPCC report said that Himalayan glaciers would be disappeared by 2035, which provoked heavy controversy. ISRO satellite mission to unveil the detail analysis of Himalayan glaciers began after the raging controversy.

The grim finding came after studying 2,190 glaciers broke the myths of disappearance of Himalayan glaciers but undoubtedly raised concern over Asia's 'water towers'.

Dr Ajai, group director, Marine, Geo and Planetary Science Group (MPSG), Space Applications Centre, Ahmedabad said that they were now sure about the findings of Himalayan glaciers shrinking, giving an account of 8% have advanced and 17% are stable. He further said that the detail data would publish soon.

The satellite images took by Resourcesat-1 over a period of 15 years (1989-2004). There were about 50 environmentalists, scientists and 14 organizations were involved in the project, including field trips and analysis of other mountainous ranges.

There were three major institutions involved in the study named B Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment and Development, Kashmir University and Jawaharlal Nehru University. The experts and volunteers also visited the glaciers to make their reports.

The study involved the basins of the Indus, Ganges and Brahmaputra. It also covered Himalayan parts that spread to China, Nepal, Bhutan and Pakistan. It is reported that the first time this type of extensive study had been done on Himalayan glaciers. Other mountainous range that have a high percentage of retreat rate are Alps.

ISRO earlier in 2010 revealed a study report on retreating glaciers, involving 1,317 Himalayan glaciers, which said glaciers had retreated by 16% since 1962. The recent satellite images also showed a minute increase in the area under mangroves.

It is significantly low as compared to other developed nations. Nevertheless, the food waste results a high usage of country total water consumption. Food Wastage in China

In a report published by the Laboratory of Organic Geochemistry, in 2009, showing in China around 62 million tons of food waste went to landfill. Another report from National Bureau of Statistics showed the country consumed 905 million tons of food in 2004. It means the 7 percent of total food production has been wasted, and this is surely a significant figure.

It is reported that in China agriculture contributes around 14 percent of country’s overall carbon emission. The rate of food waste is much lower than US, contributing only 66 million tones CO2, or 1 percent emission from food waste in landfill.
