Cold sores, which is also called as fever blisters, is defined as presence of small clusters of blisters on the lip or around the mouth. The skin turns red, sore and swollen because of the blisters.
The blisters may leak a clear fluid when they break open and further scab over for some days. These generally take a few days to 2 weeks to heal completely. The cause of cold sores is the infection by herpes simplex virus or HSV. Both HSV-1 and HSV-2 cause sores around the mouth or in the genitals area.
