Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi accepted her long waiting Nobel Peace Prize on Saturday in Oslo. In 1991 she was awarded the prize, 21 years ago.

The 'female Gandhi', as mentioned by many, was under house arrest for a total of 15 years in Myanmar. Accepting the Nobel Peace Prize, Suu Kyi said full transformation to democracy of Myanmar was still far off.

Suu Kyi is the daughter of Oxford University-educated General Aung San who is the country's assassinated independence hero. She is now 66-year-old and said much remained to be resolved in Myanmar.

This year in April Suu Kyi was elected to parliament, after being released from house arrest in 2010. Kyi said she was confident her country's President Thein Sein wants to put Myanmar on a new path.

In 1991 her Nobel Peace Prize was accepted by her sons Kim and Alexander on her behalf. Her husband Michael Aris, an Oxford academic, was also present in the ceremony then. Aris died in 1999 after getting diagnosed with prostate cancer.

In 1992 she said of using the $1.3 million Nobel Peace Prize money in establishing education and health trust for her country people.

On Saturday she accepted the prize in presence of son Kim and late husband's identical twin brother Anthony Aris.

She thanked Norway for all the support the country with five million people played in transformation of Myanmar.

Hillary Clinton's Historic Visit To Burma

Written By Anonymous on Wednesday, November 30, 2011 | November 30, 2011

State Hillary Clinton visits Myanman on Wednesday marking the first visit by U.S. Secretary of State in last fifty years. She landed in Burmese administrative capital Naypyidaw with a mission to accelerate the nascent reforms introduced by the newly formed government and to balance growing influence of China with the country.

According to analysts the trip of Mrs Clinton is the latest diplomatic effort by United States to balance growing political and economic influence of China in south-east Asia. She is also expected to voice for the need of releasing political prisoners and make an end to the brutal ethnic conflicts.

Mrs Clinton is expected to meet Burmese president Thein Sein along with other government ministers. Later she will be flying to Rangoon to meet with opposition leader Suu Kyi and non-government organisations.

Burma was once a good supplier of food across Asia. The country also enjoyed highest standards in health and literacy in the continent until World War II.

Burma now exports gas and some other lucrative products to the neighboring countries, but common people have seen little benefit in it. Over years the country remained under tight European and US sanctions.

Last time US secretary of state visited Burma was John Foster Dulles in 1955.

BURMA NEWS – 66 year-old Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi travels outside Rangoon with her son Kim Aris for the first time since her independence from house arrest last year. She is planning to make her travel to Bagan, an ancient temple city just for a holiday.

She was released last year without any conditions after seven years of house arrest and now free to travel anywhere in the country and outside.

However, the government has warned Mrs. Kyi to avoid any public gathering and organizing meetings.

Aung San Suu Kyi also plans to visit her ancestral home of her illustrious father Aung San, who served as a general and leader during Burmese independence.

After years in the house and plenty of political tug of war between her and the government, both she and her son have expressed a little break from clamor and spend a neat holiday.

Last year during a brief tour outside Rangoon witnessed a near ambushed of her convoy, so officials have warned her not to organize any public meeting to avoid any chaos that can jeopardize her life.

"It's nerve-racking. We are concerned for her safety," said Soe Aung, with the Bangkok-based Forum for Democracy in Burma.

Last week, the military backed government of Burma warned Mrs. Kyi and party to stop all political activities and avoid any public meetings. There has been fear among people that if Aung San Suu Kyi would travel outside town, there might chances of riots. Even her colleagues say, he figure is so huge in Burma, it is not possible for her to play an ordinary woman traveling for leisure.

She has herself kept her travel to Bagan a low key affair and only brief talk with reporters and a few plain clothes security personnel.

The National League for Democracy, the party Mrs. Kyi is headed said that they would inform government of her movements.

Myanmar Facing Political Change: UN Envoy

Written By one-liners on Sunday, December 5, 2010 | December 05, 2010

By ONE Liners Agency

MYANMAR NEWS - Despite of criticizing last month’s poll in Myanmar, UN envoy has expressed contentment that a political change was on the move and parliamentary by-elections could now unlock new prospects for broadening the political spectrum.

The party of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi was not released from house arrest until after the poll. She boycotted the election that won by the military backed party.

Vijay Nambiar, Chef de Cabinet (Chief of Staff) under UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that democracy was in line in the country and government formation is taking place. He expressed hope to gain new spaces, new slots for other parties in the parliament that would open opportunities for by-elections. He described the by-elections would unlock small opportunities for future broad inclusive involvement.

The United Nation earlier strongly criticized the elections in the country, which they accused were neither free nor fair.

After two decades Burma had witnessed elections on 7 November – were won by military backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP).

Six days later, Aung San Suu Kyi was released from house arrest. She won the election in 1990 for National League for Democracy (NLD) but later on she was thrown to house arrest and never allowed to take power.
