MYANMAR NEWS - Despite of criticizing last month’s poll in Myanmar, UN envoy has expressed contentment that a political change was on the move and parliamentary by-elections could now unlock new prospects for broadening the political spectrum.
The party of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi was not released from house arrest until after the poll. She boycotted the election that won by the military backed party.
Vijay Nambiar, Chef de Cabinet (Chief of Staff) under UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that democracy was in line in the country and government formation is taking place. He expressed hope to gain new spaces, new slots for other parties in the parliament that would open opportunities for by-elections. He described the by-elections would unlock small opportunities for future broad inclusive involvement.
The United Nation earlier strongly criticized the elections in the country, which they accused were neither free nor fair.
After two decades Burma had witnessed elections on 7 November – were won by military backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP).
Six days later, Aung San Suu Kyi was released from house arrest. She won the election in 1990 for National League for Democracy (NLD) but later on she was thrown to house arrest and never allowed to take power.
