| Prostitution In India gains bigger height in the last two decades |

Prostitution often a viable career option for women from every social and economic strata in Asian subcontinent. The most surprising part is girls are often happier inside the brothels – which aren’t just business centers for them, but their entire lives – than out of them. They know that they will not be accepted by society or even their families. They also know that back home they will again undergo the same exploitation with probably less money. Perhaps that’s the reason why there are increasing of rescued girls opting to go back to the brothels.
But what makes them stick to the brothels, above all, is the lure of easy money. Most of the prostitutes feel that that is their home and ponder what’s there for them outside. Call it compromise with circumstances or conditioning of the mind, the fact remains that prostitution is largely becoming a matter of preference for some adult women.
Prostitution is not legalized in most of the Asia’s countries. Even in Thailand, popular for its sex tourism, prostitution has not so far got legal stamp. Every year several attempts are made by governments and social workers to rescue the girls, but the rescued girls run back to the brothels. Living in that environment they become habituated to the lifestyle and find it easier to continue like that rather than start their life all over again.
Most of them are victims of circumstances, tricked by spouses or friends or even family members, these women find it difficult to survive outside the red sphere.
One such example is Mumtaz. Like many others too, was tricked into marriage and brought to Kamatipura, one the biggest red-light areas in Mumbai, to serve as a prostitute. She has been here since then.
“The man I was living with was dependent on me. I had two children from him. I stayed with him till they grew up a bit, then I left him and came back to Kamatipura,” she says.

She also had the option of starting a new life but she preferred to come back because none of the other jobs pay as much as this. Being a housemaid, as she told, was too much of hard work with too little pay.
There is other sub-world in this world, where girls are termed as call girls – are sleek, sophisticated and rich. They don’t have any pressing need for money. They have not been tricked into marriages that have ended up in brothels. And they neither are definitely nor spurned by society. What these women are looking for is adventure and fun. And what’s the harm in earning a quick buck while at it?
India, in the recent times see this type of prostitution where girls from very well-off families and are usually in the age group of 20-25. Some do it so that they can afford a luxurious life style, for instance going to the pubs or dining out in five-star hotels or wearing brand names. Others like the thrill involved. However, not all of them take to such a profession for fun. There are cases where blind love has played the culprit.
In Asia, particularly in Indian subcontinent, prostitution has gained a new dimension. While one hand it is a matter of survival, struggle, on the other, it’s a means to climb the social ladder and between the two lies the common answer; no regret.
