Kindergarten compulsory for 5-year-olds in New York City

UNITED STATES, New York City - Kindergarten has become mandatory in New York City for all 5-year-olds after state lawmakers in Albany voted for this lowering by one year the required age for schooling.

Though the approval of the government is awaited, but the proponents of this step praised the move.

There are in thousands five-year-olds who belong to poor families who are turned away often by the school authority due to lack of space.

A senior policy analyst at the Annenberg Institute for School Reform Norm Fruchter said, "I think it is a real gain... There is a ton of research about what early-childhood programs do for children, and I think there is a whole bunch of parents of children who, for a variety of reasons, don’t register them when they should and then they lose out for a whole year."

Fruchter also added that kids missing the kindergarten education may never recover.

The bill of this reform has gone to Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and he has ten working days to sign on it or veto.

Mr Cuomo's spokesman said they are reviewing the legislation.

Global Population Expected 9bn By 2050, India To Topple China

Harvard School of Public Health cites figures in its press release that global population may exceed 9 billion by 2050. In a review article of Professor David Bloom published in Science, it is learned that by 2100 the population is expected to rise to 10 billion. In 2011 it will top 7 billion, mentions the article, which is more than double what the global population was 50 years ago.

Bloom says that the growth will be highly uneven geographically. He adds that developed countries such as Germany and Japan may see flat population growth figure or even it may decline, but the developing countries are expected to explode. In developed countries demographics crisis can be faced as society will fail to produce enough adults who could take care of the old, where as the demographics will be challenging to the developing countries with food supply, water, housing and energy.


The report says that in Africa alone the population may grow to 1.1 billion, which will be 49% of the global projection by 2050.

However, it is a popular belief that earth will never run out of resources in accommodating the growing population. According to agricultural scientists, earth has more than enough land to feed all its population. Also, calculation reveals if the global population is packed in the density similar to New York City, the world population would fit in the state of Texas.


July 29 issue of Science magazine writes by 2050 India will topple China, the present largest population country of the world. India's population will grow to 1.69 billion from 1.24 billion where as the population of China would shrink from 1.35 billion to 1.3 billion.
