A Harmless Prank Call Kills A Nurse

Written By one-liners on Saturday, December 8, 2012 | December 08, 2012

By JOHN Peterson
December 08' 2012

A convincing prank call led an Australian nurse to believe that she was addressed by Britain Queen Elizabeth, and her son Prince Charles.

Two Australian radio hosts impersonating the British Royals phoned the nurse on duty looking after the pregnant Duchess of Cambridge, was fooled to divulge the medical report.

Later, the call was broadcast all over Australia radio, and then migrated to the entire world.

One may find this prank very interesting and even praise those two impersonators as intelligent investigators, but before you do that, be informed the nurse who divulged the information is no more.

A horrific turn of event took place on Friday. Jancintha Saldanha, the nurse who unwittingly, divulged confidential medical report, terminated her life. She was 46 years of age. No details were revealed by the Metropolitan Police.

This type of occurrences has appeared before but not as this horrific. Taking one's life.

It is to remember that in the past the media always was intrigued with the life of the British Royals.

In 2007, a reporter of News of the World was jailed for hacking into the voice mail of members of Royal household. Prior to this incident, The Daily Mirror published a series of pictures of the interior of Buckingham Palace.

In 1995, a Canadian DJ impersonated the country's prime minister, and entered the Buckingham Palace and conversed with the Queen for 15 minutes without any suspicion.

All said and done, it is tragic to note that responsible media can sometimes act juvenile. The Australian and rest of the people of the world should condemn this horrific act.

UK EMBASSY ATTACKED NEWS - After yesterdays storming and ransacking of UK embassy and residential compound in Iran by protesters, Britain has evacuated diplomatic staff from the country.

According to Foreign Office, the evacuations were done to ensure safety of staff along with their families. First group of staff are to fly out to Dubai today. It has not been confirmed whether all the UK diplomats are being evacuated out of Iran.

The Iranian protesters smashed windows of two British diplomatic compounds in capital Tehran and torched car and British flag protesting against the newly introduced sanctions on Iran over the nuclear programme imposed by London.

Iran is the fifth biggest oil exporter in the world and it says the need of nuclear plants is for generation of electricity only.

UN Security Council, European Union and United States condemned the attack. UK Prime Minister David Cameron warned of "serious consequences". He added the failure of Iran government in defending the diplomat staff and British property was a disgrace.

In 1979 US embassy in Tehran was attacked and 52 Americans were taken hostage for 444 days. After the incidence US had cut diplomatic ties with Iran.

Germany Marks 50th Anniversary Of Berlin Wall

Written By one-liners on Saturday, August 13, 2011 | August 13, 2011

Rise of Berlin Wall, a concrete barrier between East and West Berlin, covers 50 years, which divided Berlin and further defined the Cold War. It continuously reminds the citizens to stand up for democracy and freedom.

On Saturday, observing 50th anniversary of the Berlin Wall construction, the city's mayor and people commemorated the 125 victims killed then while trying to cross the 161-kilometer wall from communist East Berlin.

In 1945, after the defeat of Nazi, Germany was divided into four zones of occupation by the victorious World War II allies. West Germany housed the U.S., Britain and French, and East Germany became the territory of Soviet Union.

The East Germany communist authorities ordered sealing of all crossing points between the two Berlins with barbed wire on August 13, 1961. Later a wall was constructed dividing streets, neighborhoods, families and friendships. The wall had 45,000 cement blocks and watchtowers in dozens. East German border guards were ordered for shoot at sight to anyone spotted crossing the wall.

U.S. President Ronald Reagan, in June 1987, challenged Mikhail Gorbachev, the then Soviet leader, in his speech in Berlin to "tear down this wall." Two years later in November residents of East Germany brought down the Berlin wall as well as the government in the communist state. On October 3, 1990 both the Germany reunited.

BRITAIN NEWS - After the arrest of Rebekah Brooks, the bygone chief executive of Rupert Murdock’s News International and phone hacking scandal, shares of News Corporation, the parent company owned by Australian billionaire Rupert Murdoch have slide down to 6% to a record low.

News Corp owns two major newspapers in Britain, The Sun and the now closed News of the World. In afternoon trading, the shares saw a rapid downfall and slide down 5.5% at 13.91 Australian dollars (£9.20).

Analysts predict the scandal in British media is responsible for this damage to the company. The company has lost about 19% of its total value of its business.

"You're now looking at [about] 10 billion dollars wiped off the value since the peak," said Stephen Mayne, director of the Australian Shareholders' Association.

News Corp is a media mogul which owns four major newspapers in Britain; The Sun, the News of the World, The Times and Sunday Times. The now closed News International ex chief executive was arrested by Scotland Yard investigating the phone hacking scandal. Brooks, who resigned last week, denied the involvement in phone hacking by journalists. She was arrested on the basis of ground as an editor, she would have been expected to authorize bribe police officers and know the phone hacking by journalists to get a scoop.

In another twist, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson resigned from his job for his part in the scandal. He was criticized for hiring former News of the World reporter Neil Wallis as a phone hacking advisor.

It is also in contemplation within the directors of the company to change the leadership. They called it a “gathering storm” after tumultuous share fall and recent row of scandals in the media.
