UK EMBASSY ATTACKED NEWS - After yesterdays storming and ransacking of UK embassy and residential compound in Iran by protesters, Britain has evacuated diplomatic staff from the country.
According to Foreign Office, the evacuations were done to ensure safety of staff along with their families. First group of staff are to fly out to Dubai today. It has not been confirmed whether all the UK diplomats are being evacuated out of Iran.
The Iranian protesters smashed windows of two British diplomatic compounds in capital Tehran and torched car and British flag protesting against the newly introduced sanctions on Iran over the nuclear programme imposed by London.
Iran is the fifth biggest oil exporter in the world and it says the need of nuclear plants is for generation of electricity only.
UN Security Council, European Union and United States condemned the attack. UK Prime Minister David Cameron warned of "serious consequences". He added the failure of Iran government in defending the diplomat staff and British property was a disgrace.
In 1979 US embassy in Tehran was attacked and 52 Americans were taken hostage for 444 days. After the incidence US had cut diplomatic ties with Iran.
