About 175 people have been reported dead so far this month in China floods and another 86 are missing. The heavy rain started on June 3 in the southern and eastern part of the country and 13 provinces have been badly affected. Evacuation is in process and over 1.6 million people have been safely removed from the flood hit areas. The economic loss due to flood has reached $4.9 billion.
In the Zhejiang province alone about 8400 houses have been destroyed and over 4.4 million people have been affected, said provincial agency and Zhejiang Flood Control Office. According to the official website of the agency, 292,000 people have been evacuated.
The agency added that in Zhejiang alone the direct economic loss is about $1.18 billion.
Director of Zhejiang Flood Control Office, Zhao Fayuan, said areas around Dongtiao and Qiantang rivers are most affected.
State-run Xinhua news agency reports about 171,000 hectares of crops have been destroyed.
The flooding is the worst in the country in fifty years.
