Thanksgiving 2011 Travel Expected Rise Despite Increased Airfares

THANKSGIVING TRAVEL NEWS - The biggest travel period of the year is under way - the Thanksgiving holiday. Ninety percent of holiday travelers will travel on the day, reports AAA. About 38.2 million people will travel on Wednesday, increase of 4% over 2010 Thanksgiving.

In Illinois alone around 2.23 million people will be traveling on the day, an increase of 3.8% from last year's Thanksgiving season. According to AAA, some two million people will travel by car, even after an increase in gas prices.

AAA projects 1.8% rise in air travelers compared to last year's Thanksgiving period. The projection is made only for leisure travelers.

This year the airfares are up by 10 to 20% nationally compared to 2010. Visitors to Chicago are seen snagging at deals if they booked early.

According to website Orbitz.com, Chicago is the only destination in top 10 list this year in the US that doesn't cost more to fly.

Most of the trips will begin, connect or end through O'Hare International Airport, which is among the 5 worst weather airports. Flight cancellations and delays may take place at this airport due to snow, ice, wind, fog and thunderstorms.

Last year's data reveals 75% of arrivals and 79% of departures were on time here.

AAA also projects of 2% people traveling on buses and trains on 5-day Thanksgiving weekend.

All locomotive and rail cars are made available to and from the Chicago area by Amtrak during the season.

Historic High Fuel Surcharge By Chinese Airlines

CHINA NEWS - Several Chinese airlines have raised domestic flights' fuel surcharge to record high despite the oil prices in International market has dropped, reports CBN on Tuesday.

The surcharge comes after Civil Aviation Administration of China informed airlines the factory price of domestic oil has been fixed at 7,725 yuan per ton from August 1, and the purchase cost for the airlines was adjusted to 7,785 yuan per ton.

However, the fuel surcharges will remain at 80 yuan for shorter routes less than or equal to 800 kilometers. Routes more than 800 kilometers will have to pay more. It has been increased from 140 yuan to 150 yuan. The airlines that have announced the increase in domestic fuel surcharge include Air China, China Southern Airlines, and China Eastern Airlines.


According to a senior official of an airline company, the increased surcharge will not be covering the rise in fuel coast completely, and the profit margin of the airlines need to be decided by the ticket prices and domestic market demand.


Analyst Wu Yunying from Changjiang Securities said the high-speed railways are far behind expectation in taking number of passengers, and more to this the aviation peak season is approaching. He adds that the airlines may increase the ticket prices as well as the amount of passengers.

How To Reach

By Air

Port Blair is connected with Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata by air. Presently flights are operated by Indian Airlines, Jet Airways, SpiceJet, Kingfisher, Air Deccan, Jet Lite.

Charter flights are also permitted at Port Blair but need to take permission from from the Director General of Civil Aviation.

By Sea

Passenger ship services are from three cities of India that are Chennai, Kolkata and Vishakhapatnam. There are 3 to 4 ship services available in a month from Kolkata, Chennai and vice versa. Andaman & Nicobar, the small verdant tropical islands lie in a long and narrow broken chain sprawling like an arc in the north-south of Indian Ocean. Once notorious for 'Kalapani', a dreaded imprisonment in the Islands under the British rule, the Islands now attract overland travelers because of dense rain forests, seducing sea side beaches, unpolluted water and plenty of water sports activities. Andaman & Nicobar Islands are a part of Indian Union Territory but geographically closer to Southeast Asia. The territory consists of two islands, the Andaman Islands and the Nicobar Islands, separated by the 10° N parallel, with the Andaman to the north of the latitude and the Nicobars to the south. The capital Port Blair has the population is about 356,152 (2001 census) and the total land area of the territory is approximately 6,496 km² or 2,508 sq mi. Andaman & Nicobar Islands are consisted of 572 tropical islands where most of them are untouched and having rare flora and fauna. The Islands are vulnerable to earthquake and devastated during the 2004 tsunami, which, in turn, lost uncountable lives and homes. Before the British Rule, the Islands were inhabited by indigenous people but today the Islands are home to the number of settlers and they live in and around Port Blair. There are 36 islands inhabited by different known and unknown tribes with their entirely own culture and rule. 86% area of the territory are covered with protected forests and 50% of them are protected as Tribal Reserves, National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries, consists of luxuriant mangroves and various animal species. The famous Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park is a home to number of rare corals, colored fishes, sea turtles etc. Apart from this the Islands is a bird watchers paradise and inhabited by about 271 varieties of birds. Megapode, Swiftlet, Hornbill and Nicobar Pigeon are some of the common birds found in the Islands. History The earliest archaeological evidence says Andaman & Nicobar Islands have been inhabited some 2,200 years back by various tribes of distinct linguistic, cultural and territorial groups. Before the British colonial rule, Andaman was inhabited by indigenous people such as the Great Andamanese, the Jarawa, the Jangil, the Onge and the Sentinelese (the most isolated of all the groups). In the year 1858 British established a colony in the Islands and set a penal colony for dissenters and independence fighters, famous as a 'Kalapani' or Black Water. An isoloated prison was made on the islands for the freedom fighters and the mode of imprisonment was called kalapani.The Cellular Jail in Port Blair was considered as "Siberia" British India. After Japanese invasion during World War II, the hold from the Islands went to Japan from British. After the independence of both India (1947) and Burma (1948), the departing British decided to resettle all Anglo-Indians and Anglo-Burmese on the islands to form their own nation, although this never materialized. It became an Indian union territory (UT) in 1950. Geography & Climate

The Little Andaman Island

Andaman & Nicobar Islands are shrouded with a tropical rain forest and covered around 70% of territorial land. The total area covered of Andaman Islands is some 6,408 km2 (2,474 sq mi); that of the Nicobar Islands approximately 1,841 km2 (711 sq mi). North Andaman is covered with wet evergreen forest and lots of timber and woody climbers. The North Nicobar Islands are devoid of evergreen forest but impose a dominant position in central and southern islands of the Nicobar group. Demographics The major languages spoken in the Andamans in numerical order are Bengali (25.95%), Hindi (18.4%), Urdu (14.2%), Tamil including Sri Lankan Tamils (17.84%), Nicobarese and Telugu (12.93%). Other languages include Malayalam and English. [6] The major religion is Hinduism, with significant Muslim,Christian and Sikh minorities.
