The recent floods in Thailand has caused a global hard drive shortage leading to higher hard drive costs and eventually higher PC costs. The hard drive costs have increased more than two-fold since these floods. Thailand, the biggest producer of hard disk drives in the world accounts more than 15 percent of the global production of hard drives. So the impact of floods in this country would be felt by consumersaround the world.
As reported, the shortage could see desktop and notebook prices go up by more than 15 percent further weakening the already low US currency rates.
This current monsoon season Thailand was hit with floods that devastated the country. The flood that was rated by the Google as the most destoying flood of the last 50 years, resulted in almost two-thirds of the country being badly affected. The Google Crisis Response reported that over 900000 families and buisinesses were badly affected and hundreds of factories closed and hundreds of people have died across the country.
John Coyne, the CEO and President of the Western Digital said that that they had to temporarily close down two of their factories to save the workers as the factories are under water. He added that many of the components have been damaged which might interrupt supply chains.
In a statement issued by the Seagate Technology, it said that none of its factories were impacted and all of them are working. However the HDD component supply chain had been affected which might lead to snags in supply.
