| Peter Carey Latest Novel |
AUSTRALIA NEWS – Two times Booker Prize winner Australian writer Peter Carey is once again in the list of Booker list. If he wins then he would become the first writer to grab the award for three times.
Mr. Carey previously won accolades for his books Oscar and Lucinda (1988) and True History of the Kelly Gang (2001). This year he has been short listed for a fictional biography of the philosopher Alexis de Tocqueville named for “Parrot and Olivier in America.”
The novel depicts the life of 19th century French political thinker and historian Alexis de Tocqueville. The book has received accolades for its exuberant imagery. However, it is in the air that bookies choice for the £50,000 prize to be Tom McCarthy’s "C", described as the "story of the birth, life and death of Serge Carrefax, an Englishman born in 1898. Some of them called it “modern day Ulysses” in its approach.
Irish writer Emma Donaghu is also in front of the race for her novel “Room”. The story is about a true story of Austrian 24 year old girl Elisabeth Fritz who was captured by her father and held in the basement for 24 years. The harrowing story also portrays about a five year old boy who has lived with his mother in a single room for whole life.
Others on the shortlist, pared down from a longlist of 13, include: Andrea Levy (The Long Song), Damon Galgut (In a Strange Room), and Howard Jacobson (The Finkler Question).
The winner will be announced in London October 12.
Last year, the Booker went to Hilary Mantel for Wolf Hall.
