Australia – Australia has proposed a plan to set up refugee shelter center in East Timor. In the process Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith is going to visit Indonesia for discussing with Indonesia counterpart for a regional plan for refugee asylum center.
Indonesia is however; a bit apprehensive about the plan as they feared this could attract more refugees to Indonesia water. From Australian point of view they want to resist the inflow of refugees to from third world countries like Sri Lanka and Afghanistan who sails to Australia.
Many of these refugees have been stopped in Indonesian waters and they said that Indonesian West Timor and independent East Timor share a vulnerable land border.
The Australian foreign minister will meet with his Indonesian counterpart Marty Natalegawa in Jakarta.
Mr Smith told Australian media that Australia was hoping implement the plan of refugee center, which will organize asylum seekers to concentrate on one place.
"I think when we sit down with not just Indonesia, but other countries in the region the policy rationale for a regional processing centre is to undercut the incentive for secondary movement, particularly to undercut the incentive for secondary movement by boat across the high seas in dangerous circumstances," he said.
