In early Sunday morning as many as eight explosions have rocked India's Bodh Gaya temple complex. At least five people, including monk and pilgrim, have been injured in the serial blasts. One is critical.
The first blast took place at 5:30 a.m. (local time) and the remaining seven followed in intervals of around two minutes each.
Two live bombs have also been recovered from the area, says Superintendent of Police. India's National Investigation Agency (NIA) has also immediately rushed to the site along with forensic team. Bihar state's Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has also been learned to have left for the place.
India's Union Home Ministry has not confirmed the serial blasts to be a terror attacks as of now, but even didn't ruled out the possibilities.
Initial report suggests crude bombs were used.
The Mahabodhi temple is about 2500 years old and it is an important pilgrimage centre for Buddhists around the world. This is the place where Lord Buddha gained enlightenment. In 2002 the temple was categorized as World Heritage Monument.
Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has expressed concern as the temple is a popular tourist destination for the Sri Lankans. This year in February Rajapaksa himself visited Bodh Gaya.
Opposition party BJP's leader Prakash Javadekar said, "Central agencies had warned about the intelligence attacks, both agencies have to step up. If something that is happening in Myanmar is getting reflected in Bodh Gaya, this needs to be investigated."
