E-COMMERCE NEWS - The mass retail store Harvey Norman has recently accepted the unconquerable and has launched its online store after years of agitating against it. The Harveynorman.com.au site gives the customers acess to the heaps of the products at the Harvey Norman retail chains, froms ipads to couches to sanitary fittings and lots more and have them delivered to their doorsteps or pick them up from the regional store. Delivery charges vary- from $5.95 for delivering small items within twenty kilometres of a city area to $199 for delivering big and bulky items to as far as a hundred kilometres, away from the regional store, to remote areas. However, some other small items can only be picked up by the customer himself at the regional store, like iPads.
Gerry Harvey, the CEO of the Harvey Norman group has for long ignored and derided the online stores as a highly profitable source for sales. He has also strongly criticised the federal govertment for letting the consumers by goods online from the offshore retailers without having to pay any GST for purchases under $1000.
The shares of Harvey Norman dropped 3 cents or 1.5 percent. The Australian retail sector was hit hard this quarter as more and more custmers took to online shopping. The strong Australian Dollar has further increased this growing trend.
However, Mr. Harvey has told that he has been under severe internal pressure for launching the online store. He said that a whole lot of people working at the Harvey Norman group told him that he was mad to keep ignoring the potential of online retailing.
