WORLD NEWS / CANADA ELECTION NEWS - Michelle Lawson, a 24-year-old accountant who has agreed to work as a voluntary worker to go door-to-door with her mother for elections. She will be paid a considerable good payment of $13 an hour for her job. Only thing she has to do is to ensure residents in neighborhoods and high-turnover apartment buildings are on the voter's list.

She is not alone, but this year Canada elections have been witnessing thousands of youth workers to spread awareness and other works to make sure election day goes smoothly. There are so much efforts put in the backstage so as to make a clean and smooth elections.

Returning officers in Alberta announced last week, calling workers from all ages to start an active elections awareness program where there is a dearth of employees in the region.

“We’re so under the gun out here economically, we need to get a head start on it. That’s what we’re doing now,” said Michael Ayers, field officer for northern Alberta and former town councillor from Stony Plain.

Elections in Canada demand 6000 people in the Edmonton area to run the elections smoothly. It is estimated that about 700 people for Edmonton Center alone, to solve various queries over phone. Other duties like election day workers welcome people at the door, cross voter's names off the list after identity verification and other works.

Supervisors are to be there 14 hours on election day, from before polls open at 6:30 a.m to after polls close at 7 p.m.

There is a difference between Eastern Canada and Western Canada elections, in Eastern Canada political riding associations nominate returning officers and poll clerks, but in Western Canada, volunteers are chosen directly by the candidates.

Election workers are welcome to submit their applications online at http://www.elections.ca/home.aspx. Wages average $160 for working election day.
