WORLD NEWS/ IVORY COAST NEWS - Turmoil prone country’s incumbent leader has been captured by French military at the presidential compound in the Cocody neighborhood. Laurent Gbagbo has been detained by troops backing international recognized president Alassane Ouattara and out rightly against Laurent Gbagbo captured later at the presidential compound. The fighters are backed by French Special Forces, who used special ammunitions including tanks to penetrate into the presidential arena.
Mr. Gbagbo was hiding in an underground complex when fighters advanced on the compound with a tank and helicopter gunships. After the last presidential elections in November, Mr. Gbagbo refused to accept the lost and forcefully held the presidential post.
The capture of Mr. Gbagbo has ended the chapter of four-month political standoff between presidential rivals. The new president Alassane Ouattara must reunite Gbagbo followers who alleged international community for the fall of their president, if not the voice of Ivorian people.
Along with French troops, U.N also sent helicopters Sunday attacked at the presidential compound. U.N Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said that it was not an assault but a forceful enforcement of mission’s Security Council mandate to protect Ivorian people and U.N peacekeepers. In response to attacks, Gbagbo forces fired heavy artillery and mortars to destroy U.N base in Abidjan.
