Kerala To Host International Film Festival On December 10

INDIA NEWS - The 15th annual International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFk) will be held at 10 screening houses in Thiruvananthpuram on December 10. About 190 films focusing on Central Asian and Black American filmmakers will be screened during December10 to 17. The registration is open on www.iffk.in and November 30 is declared to be the last day.

Speaking to the media, Chairman of Kerala State Chalchitram Academy (KSCA) and Festival Director of 15th IFFK K. R. Mohanan revealed renowned German filmmaker Werner Herzog would be felicitated with lifetime achievement award.

A committee headed by renowned filmmaker Adoor Gopalkrishnan selected Herzog, who would receive the award at inaugral function of the IFFK at the Nishagandhi auditorium. Instituted last year, the award carries $10,000 and a trophy. The award will be bestowed by C. N. Karunakaram.

KSCA has increased the prize money in each category. The Suvarna Chakoram carries prize money of 15 lakh which will be shared by the director and producer of the best film. The Rajata chakoram will be given to the best director with a cash prize of Rs. 4 lakh. The best debut filmmaker will get a cash prize of Rs. 3 lakh along with Rajata Chakoram. Moreover, the Rajata Chakoram and a cash prize of Rs. 2 lakh will be conferred as “Audience Prize.”

An effort has been made to promote Malayalam Films, all selected films will get a cash of one lakh each and be shared between director and producer. Eight Malayalam films have been selected so far for Malayalam section.

As a part of centenary Celebrations of Rabindranath Tagore, a seminar on “ Explorations of the Epic and Cinematographic Form: Flowing Traditions” will be conducted. “Char Adhyaya” of Kumar Sahani's will be screened in conjunction and an Arvindan Memorial lecture will be delivered on “ the Journey of Bringing of Asian Cinema to the Centre State.”

Over 8,000 delegates and eminent filmmakers are expected to illuminate the mega event.

Steve McCurry Famous Photograph – The Story Of The ‘Afghan Girl’

From EDITOR's Desk August 13, 2011 17 years later, the story continues with a simple photograph of a sea green eyed girl when a casual photography by McCurry turned out to be one of those captivating portrait that sear the heart and ran on the cover of National Geographic magazine in June 1985. The shy girl was among hordes of refugees at the refugee camp in Pakistan. The anger of those haunted eyes was apparent, which swept away the photography fraternity and not least the whole world, but after 17 years nobody actually remember her, even her name. The year is 2011 when a team from National Geography Television & Films brought McCurry to Pakistan to search the immortal face. They searched around Nasir Bagh where the refugee camp still stands lonely among multitude. After showing her photographs to number of people, they came to know the girl in the picture returned to Afghanistan and now lived in the mountains near Tora Bora. So, they decided to hunt the girl.

$49bn Emergency Earthquake Relief Grants In Japan's Budget

Considering the emergency need of the country, the parliament has passed a whooping 4tn yen ($49bn, £30bn) emergency budget for resetting the whole region. The bill was passed by the lower house Saturday and consequently passed by the upper house budget committee early on Monday. The bill is believed to help greatly for housing reconstruction for those who lost their homes. The bill also aims to support businesses hit by the natural carnage. According to a data prepared by Japanese police, 14,704 people are died in the disaster and another 10,969 remain missing. Finance Minister Yoshihiko Noda expressed his ministry to further raise the budget allocation in coming months. Analysts have predicted that the disaster cost Japan about $300bn. The budget has also affected on regular funds like pension, child allowances and motorway tolls, which have been

Cambodia Bans Citizens From Working In Malaysia As Maids

By STAFF Writer September 15, 2011 CAMBODIA/ MALAYSIA NEWS - Cambodians can no more work as maids in Malaysia. The country banned its citizens of this following several horrific reports of rapes and beatings by Malaysian employers. Prime Minister Hun Sen announced this surprise ban on Friday after expressing disappointment with the alleges. In few cases the passports of the maids were also withheld by the Malaysian employers. The reports of maid abuse has been confirmed by the Community Legal Education Centre of Cambodia, which is working with the victims. Cambodia-Thailand Trade Recovering

By STAFF REPORTER October 17, 2011 In the first eight months of this year the trade between Thailand and Cambodia went up by 8%. Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh said yesterday the trade between went up to $1.93 billion. The export of Cambodia to Thailand was 125.6 million dollars, which is 17% lower compared to the same period last year, whereas the export of Thailand to Cambodia went up by 10% to 1.8 billion dollars. Director of Thai embassy's Foreign Trade Promotion Office, Jiranan Wongmongkol said trade between the two countries is seeing better recovery since August when the Pheu Thai Party came to power led by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.
