CHINA NEWS – Even before the dust has been settled down over the criticism of jailed Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo, there is another brewing. It is rumored that China’s high profile human activist Chen Guangcheng is being arrested in his house. In a secretly shot video, the 40 year-old blind civil rights activist has confirmed.
Mr. Chen was arrested and sentenced to four years and three months imprisonment for “damaging property and organizing a mob to disturb traffic.” Later on September 8, 2010 he was released but he himself lamented in the video saying he had come out of a small jail and entered a bigger one.
However, there is still any official declaration from Chinese authorities on the house arrest of blind activist.
The video tape has been received by US based campaign group China Aid who said they received the hour-long film from an anonymous government friend.
Mr. Chen is seen in the film sitting on a ladder and lamented since his freedom from jail he had been under 24-hour surveillance. The blind self-taught lawyer said that his phone had been cut off and there were Chinese authorities and vehicle blocked the entrance of his house.
"I cannot take even half a step out of my house. My wife is not allowed to leave either. Only my mother can go out and buy food to keep us going," said the activist, who used to offer legal advice to local people.
China Aid's founder and President Bob Fu said the activist was living in a miserable condition and could be beaten at any time. He further added that China was under serious threat of eloping democracy and all right advocates were jailed, disappeared or harassed.
Last month US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also put light on the conditions of human right activists in China and demanded the release of Mr. Chen along with the jailed Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo and detained lawyer Gao Zhisheng.
