“We are not going to allow them to take advantage or exploit this natural disaster,” Qureshi told reporters in New York yesterday. The result “depends on how effective and quick the response is. That is why it is so important that the international assistance comes immediately.”
Pakistan have seen the worst-ever flood that wiped out thousands lives throughout northwest villages. The recuperating cost would be so high that threatens to obstruct already fragile economy of the country. It is reported that Finance Minister Abdul Hafeez Shaikh will ask the International Monetary Fund to lend $10 billion.
Mr. Qureshi said that the deluge has crumbled the economy, devastated 17 acres of farm land and threatens to loss the battle against Taliban at the Northwest province. Pakistan army helps US force against the Islamic radicals across the northwest for more than a year. Hundreds of Pakistani soldiers have already killed in suicide bombings and gun attacks by guerrillas. It is hoped that the fund would probably support the fight when the country is in its weakest state.
Mr. Quereshi further said that the flood has already damaged the peace process and the condition was critical. They already invested lots of money and manpower to fight against terrorism and all hard-won gains would go to vain if they fail to recover from the catastrophe. It is estimated that 1 million acres of cotton and 1 million tons of wheat destroyed.
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that US would give emergency aid of $60 million, raising the total to $150 million. There are also personal contribution from American citizen goes to Pakistan.
