China - Oil spill spread in the northern Dalian beaches has scrubbed away by some remarkable and immensely hardworking effort. The heroic effort of administration helped to avert a nearly catastrophe that could have wiped out thousands, is considerably escaped. However, the accounts of damage done during the disaster are still in doubt.
Officials have done their best after an explosion that cracked a major oil pipeline and spill around 1,500 tons, or about 11,000 barrels, of crude into the bay off Dalian’s northeastern coast. The official said they minimized the damage by containing the oil before it mix with the Ocean and cross the international line. Nevertheless, the accounts of damage of oil spill in the northeastern coast of Dalian are still speculating.
According to Greenpeace report, the oil was knowingly released from onshore tank to water to prevent further damage to storage facility. A poisonous gas dimethylbenzene could have caused toxic cloud, endangering the whole area, so official released the oil into the water.
Some anonymous eye witnessed people said that the workers deliberately opened the valve instead pumping out the oil, fearing of explosion that could crack the toxic gas chamber. The oil then released downhill into the sea.
The clean-up mission reveals some makeover of the whole disaster and disbelief among business owners and common people as they believe government masks the whole story when it has converted into disaster.
“It couldn’t possibly have been 1,500 tons,” one Dalian business owner whose workers joined in the cleanup said Tuesday.
“The thick oil layer stretched as far as the eye could see,” he said, standing above a restored beach.
The clean-up is still to be completed. The process has mostly affected the fishermen, who boats are held in the coast. Some are expecting to clean the oil fast so that they can go back to their usual business.
